Hi Kara -
Thanks for considering the beautiful and "off the beaten path" area! I think that you're best bet is to take taxi's and/or microbuses instead of renting a car.
OK - Here's a sample itinerary...
June 9 : Arrive at noon - Take a cab to Zona Hippos to unwind a little.
Around 4 pm, take a taxi to Leon (about $50, or go to the Israel Bus Station via taxi and take a microbus - direct service usually with air conditioning - leaves when the bus is full, but it's less than $5 per person.) This takes about 2 hours.
Arrive Leon - check into your place (for budget travellers, we like ViaVia with Bart and Veronique, or BigFoot Hostal with Philip. Another option is Los Balcones but you'll need a reservation for that one. Carlos owns it and they sell-out.)
June 10: Take a direct microbus or a chicken bus to Chinandega at your leisure. Arrive Chinandega (less than 1 hour). You can take a taxi to one of our fave places - Restaurante Paraiso or Restaurante Buenas Aires - for a nice lunch (killer filet mignon at both - about $8). If you want to walk around a little, go to Jaime's bar Cazadores and he can hold on to your bags while you do so. He is near the Esquina del Bancos, which is a lively area. Tip him $10 and your bags will be safe.
Call Guillermo, our best taxi driver at 8869-1387. If you don't have a cell, there are internet places with phone centers or people on the street with pay phones (they're usually in little booths.)
Guillermo will take you to Al Cielo with Javier and William. Check into your cabana and enjoy the vista and the cool breezes!
June 11: We'll arrange for Javier or William to drive you Jiquilillo to catch our Water Taxi service across the mouth of the Estero Padre Ramos (not sure how much for the boys, but the boat is less than $20 in total). We'll have to wait until the tide chart comes out on the first to confirm the time, but it will probably be around noon. This will be a fun trip, and you can hang out with Tina at Rancho Tranquilo in Jiquilillo until the boat is ready, or at Los Zorros (also owned by a friend, Rudy).
We'll pick you up at the Blue House and bring you up to your beach houses.
June 12: Kayak the Estero Padre Ramos - beer/water and guide included. Nightime activity: Moro Hunting! The specialty of the House, and you get to bask in the fruits of your labor the next day when you eat the delicious soup prepared by Ramone.
June 13: Two options here - horseback riding in the wetlands or volcano trip. Both are incredible. I can email you separate information if you like.
June 14: Reverse the boat trip, or take Mechapa's chicken bus at 4 am for Chinandega. Get back to Leon, spend another night there, or work your way back to Managua and stay at the Las Mercedes across from the airport and take advantage of their big pool!
June 15: Fly out at 1pm (you can walk across the street, check in 3 hours prior, and then scoot back to the Las Mercedes for your final goodbye to Nicaragua.)

Bounce this off your friends, and see what the response is!
Email me back with ANY questions - here to help!!
Truly,
Stacy

If you're interested in a little adventure I offer 3 and 4 day horseback trips in the mountains outside of Leon. We call them "Sharing adventures" because we take in much needed supplies to the poor farming communities that live up there plus we have a great time. We have a bunk house that we stay in that has running water a lights. I would provide the transportation and food. We just got back from a trip last Sun that was amazing. We took in building materials to help finish a well that provides clean drinking water to 5 families/30 people. The next project well be to help a small school w/supplies for the children. I also have a small B&B on the beach just outside San Juan Del Sur. Check out my sites.
