el maadi is the best place for long time living, apartment and a lot of not egyptian living there, if Hotels there a lot of hotels , Sofitel el maadi id 4 stars and a very good one, and many hotels if u come for short time .. any new Question we glade to help.

there is a lot of places to stay here in cairo
you can go on to www.expedia.com and see a hotel
and http://www.hostelio.com/egypt/cairo/ to see hostels and so on
if u need a flat
that is some thing difficult to get and u r not here in egypt
u must be here and then go and search for a flat

it depends always for what are you looking for to stay in.
there are hotels and places where you can see Nile and enjoy the view from your room's balcony.
and if you will stay for a long time, a year or 2 years maybe, it will be more suitable for you to get an apartment. Hotels will be expensive you're expecting a long stay here.

you can stay in everywhere ..depending on your money and your life level that you need..
maybe in hostel it will cost 50-100 perday maybe in flat and it cost like 800 per week...or you can choose a hotel ..in maadi it's like 70$ per night i think..so you have many choices ,,,

In Cairo , You will have no problem concerning your stay , There is a lot of variety starting from very small hotels and motels nearby the center so it is easy to move doing your tours , about the rates can start in small hotel or motel from 20 or 25 us$ (I am talking about small Motels)
Of course if you are welling to pay better price you will have better hotel service zone etc..
It is also better to reserve it before coming , like this you avoid the wake in rate which is some times very high.

(Other issue if your plan is to stay long time)
