Honeymoon Planning to Croatia
Web
I wanted to get more information about some good hotels to book, restaurants to eat at and things to do in Croatia for my honeymoon. We are flying in and out of Dubrovnik and plan to go up the coastline to some islands. Any recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tanuka

Hi there!
First congrats about you wedding, and choosing Croatia as place to spend your honeymoon. At the beginning have to mention that I am not from Dubrovnik (even I have been there few times) and have to say that you picked really good place. Few tips... About restaurants I would look this page: http://www.bestindubrovnik.com/restaurants/7/default.aspx, and I remeber that I read some review in newspapers about Gil's Cuisine & Pop Lounge (www.gilsdubrovnik.com) hope that wasn't paid ad, but comments were rather good. Hm, in that kind of restaurants you just can't have bad food, generally Croatian food is very tasteful, and you can also go in local (not so classy restaurants as that Gil) and more cheaper like TAVERNS or local name KONOBA. In that kind of places you will feel local touch, and most likely you will not be surrounded and annoyed with foreigners. Just click on tavern and check for yourself.
Near Dubrovnik you have ELAFITI ISLANDS, one day you can go in tour by local ship, or in moe distanced ISLAND MLJET (stunning little island with a chapel builty by monks in I think 15th century). If you have time during your stay in Croatia, I would strongly suggest to visit National Park Krka (or more distanced from Dubrovnik Natioanl Park Plitvice Lakes) the scenery is breathtaking. Also if you like to Party island Hvar should be nice place to go out one night. For accomodations please check official Dubrovnik Tourist web page which you can find here; http://www.tzdubrovnik.hr/english/arrival_accommodation.php?id=1180 as you see you can choose from * to ***** stars hotels. ;o))
BTW. Also I would add this...I would avoid Dubrovnik during July and august. Because of so many Cruisers luxury oceanic ships, city is flooded with people and tourists, and you can forgot free walk and enjoyment in the city. The best time to visit is in (late) spring or (early) autumn, and you can still enjoy and swimm in amazing clean Adriatic Sea. Dubrovnik is one of the most expensive cities in Croatia (one coffee on Stradun - main street in Dubrovnik can go up to 5 us dollars, and in other places is 2$ or less) so keep in mind that this world tourist attraction with amazing architecture has Its price.
Hope this was helpful, once more, I wish you pleasant stay and nice memories to bring back to your home!
cheers from Pula, Croatia

Hi,
I would agree with Hrvoje in most of his comments about Dubrovnik only.. don't be scared its not that expensive. True, Stradun is the most expensive street in the city but just a step away the prices are normal. Among the city walls I would recommend you a small vegetarian restaurant in Prijeko street named "Nishta", out of Pizza places only 'Mea Culpa", Bosnian place 'Taj Mahal", for fish or local food definitely go to restaurant ORSAN on Pile Gate. Gil's has a really great ambient( is opposite Dominican monastery) as well as 'Karaka" situated in the old harbor.
Dubrovnik can be pretty busy especially on weekends trough the day when those Cruise ships arrive but you may use the day to escape to islands, to Ston, to Cavtat or in Konavle region--In Konavle a must is the KONAVOSKI DVORI konoba..the place with the most local food with only nature around (traditional way of preparing the lamb or octopus under the bell)

If you're afraid that the city would be to crowded and since you have a wish for visiting the islands maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to choose a hotel on one of the Elafitis situated an hour from Dubrovnik.
On Lopud would recommend you Villa VILLINA and on island Sipan Hotel BOZICA.
These islands have frequent connections to the city and islands nearby.
For visiting islands here are some web pages you may check for ferry schedule.
www.jadrolinija.hr - ferry for Elafiti, Mljet and Korcula
www.gv-line.hr---catamaran line for Sipan, Mljet, Korcula and Lastovo (in July & August)
To get to Hvar you will need to use combination of the both. Or the combination of GV-line and www.krilo.hr....in this case think you will need a sleepover in Hvar but that would be a great opportunity for making a day trip to Split or to the island of VIS with Jadrolinija catamaran or ferry.
For party announcements on the whole coast check ww.clubpages.cjb.net

Enjoy your stay and congratulations,
Marija
