2 weeks in Amsterdam is pretty long. I reccommend you to stay in Amsterdam during weekdays (sun to thursday). Then rooms are cheaper. For April and holidays I reccommend you to book over the internet (booking.com) For other times you can take a gamble and book on arrival at a reservation office. A lot of times they have very special deals. Sometimes even half price.(amsterdamhotelservice.com)
In the weekends its nice to go to a hotel in the countryside. As a lot of times those hotels have business guests during the week and are half empty in the weekends.
A couple days to one of the islands or friesland is nice. Or go to Antwerp in Belgium or bruxeles (only 2 hours from Amsterdam) I reccommend to start and finnish your trip In Amsterdam....thats handy for your flight..

good luck....arthur

Where else are you planning on visiting during the 2 weeks? If you are going all over The Netherlands I would recommend different places as hotels in Amsterdam are pricer then out side of the city. Then you get to know more of the culture as well.

Try to find a short stay private appartment on craigslist dot com or alexandersappartments dot com. If you share, its cheaper and you can cook for yourself too.

I think it depends on what you are looking for: are you coming to smoke pot and live it up, or are you looking to see the country and see sosme historical places. It also depends on what time of year you are coming: if you are coming now, then it is gray and cold, so you might be interested in museums and theatre, but if it is the summer, you might be interested in the beaches and biking and the islands. You should be more specific. The Stay Okay hostel is cheap and nice in Amsterdam and it is right in the Vondel park.

It all depends on what you want to do! Just in Amsterdam for the smoke, drink and fun thing, then take an appartment or a hotel (but not realy in the center, its more expensive there) If youre here for culture and to see more of the Netherlands I would recommend to stay some days in Amsterdam, then go to the north, like Leeuwarden or Groningen and look around there. After that go south, like Maastricht or to the southwest Vlissingen and do things there. Depending on what youre going to do after that go back to Amsterdam or travel on to youre next destination.
Butbe aware there are coming days like easter and then hotels will be overbooked and more expensive. If you come later in the year you could also think about camping if you guys are in to that. Its way cheaper!

You've gotten pretty good advise on what to do. Do some homework before you leave for Amsterdam. There are 5 of you anyway. Find out some basic things you want to do so you can budget things well. Staying outside Amsterdam is cheaper and some hostels can accommodate 5 in a room and still with a private toilet. How about including at least 3 other places in those 2 weeks?

In my opinii=on 2 weeks in AMS is too much and also too expensive. Travel around the Netherland and DO consider visit the south and come to my hometown BREDA! We have a cheap hotel oposite the railwaystation! CU in Breda

This would be interesting to follow up on how you spent your time & stay and if you did succeed with the hotel(s) that you saved plenty from?
