Lonely planet as all of them have said is a safe bet...

U can check for the TTK road maps of each city...they are good...

advice you to first fix what all u want to see or where all you want to go...with a local support partner...if u don't get anyone - u can try me!!!...

the local support partner will be able to guide u better than anyone else...

for eg. - am in kerala...and i can assure u that - i can get you the best deal in town...for am a local here...

the best houseboat, the best hopmestyas, the best rates in any hotel...whether - its a 5 star like TAJ or a no star like a home stay...

choice is yours...u have to decide..

You can take Lonely Planet Book for your India's Tour. And India's Roadmap can be bought from Mumbai Airport or any Railway Station at any Book Stall.

Travelling through Road by Bus will not be easy for you. Its better if you travel distances between 2 cities by Train as it would be comfortable, economical & fast too in comparison to travel by Road.

Some travellers also swear by the Rough Guide apart from the obvious Lonely Planet. The following URL can give you some more info about the Rough Guide:

Though the lonely planet is the traveeler's bible I do not quite agree with most of their reccommendations for places to stay.
For a road map the best bet is an Eicher Road Map of Mumbai. They are the best Indian maps available well researched and detailed.
If you need any further help feel free to give me a buzz.
Cheers and Happy travelling.
