Fasano is the best hotel. Any other beach front hotel in Ipanema is also good. Keep two streets in mind: Farme de Amoedo and Paul Redfern, both in Ipanema. They have lots of bars where you can meet lots of people of all kinds.

the simpler your accomodation the more contact with local people you'll have, as well as interesting foreigners. You should be looking for a hostel, best way to meet people and have awesome local experiences.

Ipanema for us, Cariocas (locals), is the best of the best in Rio.
Better to leave, to shop and to go to the beach.
Take a time in Copacabana, but be more focus in Ipanema.

You can actually walk from one beach to the other. As far as accommodation, Copacabana has very good hotels for all budgets, whereas Ipanema hotels are about 30% more expensive. I recommend the Astoria Palace in Copacabana. It is a solid 4* and you can easily walk to Arpoador, which is the beginning of Ipanema beach. If you send me an e-mail, I will be glad to send you a quote with or without transfers from the airport.
Boa viagem!

Hello, if you want to meet people I would say the best option is to stay in a hostel, and these are also good places to arrange trips and activities. Hostels in Rio are full of people of all ages, not just college students on a gap year, and you can really meet interesting people that way. In Ipanema there is a little gated street just off Rua Barao do Torre where there are six or seven little hostels, all with friendly staff who will give you lots of information. I like Hostel Harmonia http://www.nileguide.com/destination/rio-de-janeiro/hotels/hostel-harmonia/402104?keywords=hostel%20harmonia and Wave Hostel http://www.nileguide.com/destination/rio-de-janeiro/hotels/ipanema-wave-hostel/402048 best. There are also good guest houses in Santa Teresa, if you don't mind being a little way from the beach, and there is a real neighborhood feel there that makes it easy to make friends.

Ipanema has a less commercial beach, with far fewer hotels than Copacabana, hardly any ocean-front restaurants. The neighborhood of Ipanema is considered maybe the most chique of Rio.
In Ipanema's side streets you'll find the world's most important jewelers, many boutiques of international standing, the pub where the world-famous song "The Girl from Ipanema" was composed, some of Rio's finest restaurants, and much more.
Yet it contrasts with shanty-towns (now 'pacified'!) in the background.
The "crowd" in Copacabana is often more receptive with regard to visitors; in Ipanema one usually needs a wee bit more time to make friends.
Here's where the changes for the better in Brazil often had their beginning, due to the slightly better of, and hence more cosmopolitan, residents.
There are all kinds of 'artsy' places to visit, and almost any 'must-see' place is never far from either Ipanema or Copacabana.
If you were to seek more detailed advice, book hotels, tours, or other such, at favored rates, I have to suggest that you contact me in good time.
Sure that you'll enjoy your stay,
I am
Yours;
