Curepipe, is one of the cities of Mauritius, as such it has a central city area whereby all the activities are concentrated. Namely shops, vegetable and meat market, and everything you would be looking for households. However, unlike Port Louis, the city of curepipe, is cooler and is less busy, thus giving you the comfort of wandering around without much hazzles.
Also, in curepipe, you will find nice churches which you can visit, nice oldies shops which are mostly luxury stuffs. And it is a place where you find a lot of luxury goods.
Curepipe ressembles much more a french town than the other mauritian cities.
At night, sometimes, you have nice parties and shows at the lake point. And the botanical garden and trou aux cerfs are such nice places for having lunch.
Curepipe has the best micro climate in mauritius if you are tired of the Hot and uncomfortable hot and scorching heat.

Hello Vijay

Curepipe's main street of historical interest is Elizabeth Ave. West of the town centre, Curepipe's botanical gardens.
Just north of the gardens, Trou aux Cerfs crater is the town's biggest natural attraction. It's been extinct for ages, and the crater floor is now heavily wooded, but a tarred road leads up to and around the rim to rest stops with beautiful views.
A few kilometres south-west of town, Tamarind Falls are awkward to reach without your own transportation and good hiking boots. At the bottom of the series of seven falls, you can enjoy a dip in the deep waters, and the parkland around the falls is perfect for hikes.

Hope this help, Enjoy.

Hey Ashfaq you are so right, EVERYTHING is so much cheaper in Port-Louis if you want to buy items imported from the visitors country of origin!!!!

If you want to buy Mauritian products they are cheaper than Port-Louis everywhere on the island except in tourist traps, hence my comment!

You don't seem to have an idea about what it is like to be a tourist, very few tourists visit a country to take home momentos imported from other countries, they want reminders of the country they visit so if something was made/grown anywhere in Mauritius there is usually some transportation costs involved however, there are very few companies making gifts for tourists in Port-Louis, most are situated elsewhere and a large number, especially model boat builders, are located in Curepipe and have NO TRANSPORTATION COSTS! I hope any visitors you try to help can see how small-minded your comment was.

Curepipe is the coolest town in Mauritius because of its relatively high altitude,it often experience more rain and cooler temperature than more other places in Mauritius.

Curepipe is a nice town to explore .

There are certainly many better eating options than sleeping ones .
For a place that serve up sizzlingmeat dishes and succulent burgers of different variety try Manhattan .If you are looking for a more upmarket experience,La Potiniere offers
Classy French food .

The area of Floréal is good for bonanza shopping.Wiht their famous brand shops. Curepipe, the second most important town is the heaven of shopping lovers. Shopping can be done in the factory and duty free shops of Floréal. Cashmere, carpets, jewellery, ready made clothes are available and good value for money.

There are also some ship model factories. Ship models from Mauritius are quite famous.

Trou aux Cerfs, an extinct crater situated at 650 metres above sea level. It offers a beautiful view on the Moka range and right up to the sea.

Curepipe is a town (population 81,600 in 2003) centrally situated in Mauritius, an island country in the southwest Indian Ocean. It is second in size and importance to Port Louis, the capital. The name originates from the practice of settlers coming to the town to refill, or "cure" their pipes.
Compared to the rest of the island, Curepipe lies at a higher elevation, often referred to as the "central plateau". Curepipe has the extinct Trou aux Cerfs (Crater of Stags) volcano lying in the middle of the city.
New George V stadium, CurepipeCurepipe is home to the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and the New George V stadium (pictured), which is located in the Forest-Side district of Curepipe and recently hosted events of the 6th Games of the Indian Ocean Islands (Jeux des Iles de L'Ocean Indien, JIOI). The Royal College Curepipe and St. Joseph's College, two of the oldest schools in Mauritius, are located in the centre of Curepipe. There is a Carnegie library established by the Carnegie Foundation in 1917 which is well-known for its manuscript-collection and its collection on Indian Ocean Islands books. It hosts the Curepipe Botanic Gardens, with the rarest palm tree of the world (unique specimen of Hyophorbe amaricaulis).
The road seen in the image is the main one leading through Curepipe from the main motorway (La Vigie), towards the major Jan Palach North and South bus terminals, heading to Phoenix, and back to the motorway towards Port Louis.
City HallLying on the central plateau, Curepipe has a temperate climate with cool winters and rainy, humid summers. The soil is lush and rich, as testified by the lovely conifer woods surrounding the city. It has beautiful vegetable and flower markets. One can easily mistake this city for an English academic town, as it is home to many schools and tertiary institutions.
The French founded the settlement at the very beginning of the French colonisation of the island, with the cool climate likely reminding them of their native France. A neighboring town is in fact named Nouvelle France, which translantes to New France in English.
Until recently, Curepipe was the primary place of residence for French descendants, with well kept, posh villas and shopping malls. The increasing urban sprawl and better roads and communications may have convinced them to shift base to the scenic western coast.
The town of Curepipe is scheduled to host the 2008 Castel Beer Trophy, which will feature the hosts Mauritius, Tanzania, Mayotte and Réunion. It is to be played from 30 June to 6 July.

Hi Vinay, you are living in Cpe. and give this Question to the public? I think, if not you , who better will know about it. Otherwise, i will also give you some mor information. Best regards from Andrea

One of the more popular cities in Mauritius is Curepipe, a progressive area that is located around 30 kilometers from Port Louis. According to history, Curepipe was considered by French colonizers as the town that reminded them most about their home country, especially with its temperate climate. In fact, one of the villages here is named Nouville France, which literally translates to New France.

Curepipe may not be the largest city in Mauritius but it definitely has a lot of things to offer to the casual visitor. It is a melting pot of various cultures, which is a testament to the excitement and diversity of the city. Curepipe is also known as a health resort for its wide array of establishments offering various health care services. Across Curepipe are must-see destinations such as the municipal gardens, and old colonial buildings. There is also a dormant volcano at Trou aux Cerfs, just a few kilometers outside of Curepipe. Just a few miles away from Curepipe is another eco tourism destination, the Tamarind Falls.

Curepipe, being one of the more popular cities in the country, also has its share of good, classy hotels and resorts. There’s the Hotel Continental which dominates the row of shops and commercial establishments in the city. It has become a favorite destination for foreign visitors because of its homey appeal and quiet atmosphere.

I would just like to point out that when people talk of Curepipe being cold, I would say it is similar in temperature to a mild European summer but it is cooler than most other places in Mauritius. Cold is a European winter, cold when compared to cold European temperatures it is not, don't turn up in padded jackets, you wont need them but do remember an umbrella or a waterproof coat, chances are you will need them.

hi ,
I definitely agree with Mathew's post . I shall only add that if you are in Curepipe you better seize the opportunity to visit other places around.I mean like going to floreal where they build these boats replicas also in a same go you may visit jewel making factory and other factory shops around.

And it depends on whether you want to have a quick look around or can you spare another day then you may go for sightseeing places like alexandra viewpoint ,the nature park around Plaine Champagne ,Grand bassin a cult place with a huge statue of lord Shiva .There is also a very nice restaurant nearby its at Bois Cheri. The interest there is that to reach the resto you will have to go through a tea field and factory.nature and view around the resto is simply magnificent.

Shall there be anything in particular you would like to know about, perhaps an activity you are looking for, please let me know and I will find the information you need if I don't already know it and get back to you.

Cheers
Judex

Hi.

Curepipe is in the central plateau (high lands) of the island, its not coastal and is renown for a cooler if not colder and rainy climate.
Its good for shopping and there are a variety of model boats shops as well as Cinema and a Casino. About a mile further down, there is Floreal village with quality clothing shops and 'artisanal' materials such as tables, marbles, wood carves...
You can also visit the Trou Aux Cerfs Volcano crater which offers magnific viewpoint of Mauritius.

I would also recommend that you travel a few miles further down to Phoenix, where our famous beer is brewed and the glass blowing in the Mauritius glass gallery.
There are shopping malls across the road for more shopping.

Hi,

There are 2 things to remember about Curepipe, firstly, the climate, it is cooler and damper than most places on the island and secondly, Curepipe is where lots of Mauritians go for shopping as they can find everything they can in the capital Port-Louis but it's a bit cheaper and more convenient, Port-Louis is a very hot place and can be uncomfortable shopping all day.

For the visitor, there is not much in the way of holiday activities, I would recommend shopping, Curepipe is where the majority of scale model boats are made, these are exact replicas of tall ships and are very detailed. There is a botanical garden which has the rarest palm in the world and not far from there, you will find Troux Aux Cerf, a stunning volcanic crater.

Think of Curepipe as a very well kept secret with not much to draw the tourist aside from the above but it is certainly worth spending at least a day there shopping and perhaps just cooling off with the cooler climate.

If there is anything in particular you would like to know about, perhaps an activity you are looking for, please let me know and I will find the information you need if I don't already know it and get back to you.

Cheers
Mat

It is not cheaper in curepipe than in Port Louis. How can you say it is cheaper when everything comes to the port louis docks and have to be transported to curepipe, thus transportation costs are added to the prices of the products.
Furthermore, even some vegetables like lettuce are more expensive in curepipe, rs20 a lettuce in the bazaar of curepipe, while the same one is rs8-10 in port louis.
I really cannot find what you have in mind for comparing prices between port louis and curepipe, it is logical that it should be cheaper in port louis since the products arive directly from the docks.
