No tipping Taxi drivers required for trips around the city. Thai's don't do it you don't need to.
That said if you are carrying large bags or need assitance a tip is appreciated. If you really need to feel better, just round up the fare to the nearest 10baht, bt121 fare give them bt130.

There's no need to tip a taxi driver. You may also want to be aware that they should always use their metres. If they quote you a price or say that their metre is broken, smile and say, "No thanks". There are enough honest taxi drivers better deserving of the fare. In Samui, be aware that taxis are just about as expensive as in Europe and the drivers will often extort money from you. Avoid them at all costs.

You don't have to tip cab drivers here in Thailand as they will probably try and rip you off anyway by going the long way round to your destination. However, I am only generalising and talking of my own experiences and depending on the distance you travel, 10 to 20 Baht should be more than enough. Entirely up to you but tipping cab drivers is not the norm here in Thailand. Be sure the cab driver turns on the cab trip meter! If he says it is broken or gives you a flat rate for the trip..leave the cab and get another one.

Usually the tip is included in the fare that was already swelled at the time of the negotiation. But however in the case you want to do the generous an adequate tip avoids about 40 B-, this way we will be thank you with a smile. With 100 B- tip the driver will open the door and help get down by smiling at you even more. With 1000 B- the driver will burst from the laughs

There is no tipping culture in Thailand. The chances are you are getting screwed anyway, so I suggest you try knock 10 to 20% off his first offer. Thailand is run by the 'transport mafia' and it helps if you know what the locals pay before you take a taxi/tuk-tuk/motorbike taxi.

Living in Thailand now for 20 years I tip everyone even the noodle shops. A normal Cab driver I round it out to the nearest 10 to 50Thai baht. Example if the fare is 200 - 210 Baht I give him, or her 250 Baht. If it is 230 or 240 Thai Baht I give 250 Baht. I then ask for their card and if I need a driver again they know I will tip them. If I need them for a private taxi service I tip 100+ Thai baht depending on their service. If you do this you will always have a very reliable driver whenever you return to Thailand.
Please understand that taxi drivers have not had a pay raise for the past 10 years until recently and it was not very much and gas prices have gone up.

Round up to the nearest 10 baht with a meter taxi and don't ever take a taxi that won't use the meter - end of story.

Also, when in restaurants, 20 baht is a reasonable tip and I would only leave 40 baht or more if the food and service were exceptional.

I always use taxi because after tiring day,taxi seem to be good choice for me.I always add more 5-10 baht for driver.They seem happy with that.If someday I am in happy mood and the traffic is bad.Also the drive is nice,I add extra 15-20 baht more.If the driver is not nice I never add more haha.That's my way.

yes don't need to tips like in US but it's always nice to give if you are in hurry and he takes you there on time or if you have a lot of luggage depending also on the trip, city ride or else. Be aware of the taxi in front of hotel make sure they switch on meter if not further than city to airport. And if you take toll way you will need to pay

I always tip. That is if the service requested is up to my expectations. ie did he turn on the meter? Is there music or a Thai talk show on the radio? Does he know where I want to go? Does he drive safely? Tip mostly between THB 10 - 50 Remember that Taxi's are still cheap in Bangkok even when you tip!

Hi,

You do not have to tip a taxi driver. If you have a lot to carry or the cost of your trip are for exemple 71 Bath you can tip 80 Bath.
If the driver are also nice, for myself i tip too..

You may also want to be aware that they should always use their metres. Some of them are using a trick like: "sorry no working" and tell you the price of your course, but never say OK, just smile to them and say NO THANK YOU, because when you will be on a destination they will make you a problem for sure...

There are enough honest taxi drivers specialy in Bangkok !!

In Koh-Samui, be aware all taxis are just about as expensive as in Europe and the drivers will often extort money from you. Use this service only with no choice !!!
You have a shuttle every 10 mn what you can take, the cost are 10 bath for 1 km.. Taxi are 250 bath for 1 km..

Phuket area also, beware the taxi meter and "took took"..

You dont need to give them tips because if you call the taxi service, you will have to pay extra for 20 bahts for the service normally. But if you are kind and they drive good company and not try to cheat you may give them some extra 100 bahts for kindness. Its not necessarily but just for kindness.

Make sure the meter is turned on first. Round upto to the nearest 10 baht. Helps if you carry small change, many driver do not have such and if for example your fare was 140 and you gave 200 baht, sometimes they will try to say 'sorry, no change'. So if your fare is 154, give 160.

Most service workers be they taxi drivers, bar staff or whatever do not earn very much money. The average unskilled worker in Thailand often will only earn 150 to 200 baht per day if they are lucky.

You should always round up your change to the next 10 or 20 baht. If you are happy with the service and you are sure that you are not being ripped off; be generous, you will have a big impact upon that person and they will give you a giant appreciative smile.

Tipping is not the norm in Thailand. Although I am sure a taxi driver or anyone Thai would appreciate it if you can afford it..I guess 10% is standard anywhere. In terms of the average wage in Thailand (10,000 baht per month) 10 baht would be a very generous tip

Always leave them with a couple of baht as these guys earn a low income and can do with a extra few baht from generous customers. If they smile and chat and help you with your bags why not give them a 10 or 20 baht tip. :-)
