Well, right now its a little confusing the situation in the south and center of Chile, because the earthquake, but if u coming to the north of Chile or in a few weeks, I can give u some tips:
Donât walk to late alone in the street of the center in any city, especially if u are a drunk, because u can be an easy target. It is better take a taxi, or even more safe a radio taxi.
Be careful whit u camera, donât walk whit the camera in your shoulder or neck its safer have it inside a bag.
Be careful whit the money, specially in the taxi, always check how much money u are giving to the taxi driver, because sometimes they can change the money and make u think u give them less.
In general Chile its very safe country, we donât have kidnapping or big gangs, so I hope u enjoy u trip.

Well, I am afraid there is mass hysteria almost everywhere due to the constant aftershocks and possible tsunamis...I guess May June will be more suitable...
Tips:
It depends on the regions you want to visit...In Santiago you should always carry your backpack in front of you...pickpockets take the opportunity and they work in groups so if you are easily distracted, you are easy to mug.
In Valparaiso, Cerro Concepcion, Alegre are a must...they are so picturesque and charming...try to avoid poor looking areas though.

hello friend.
inthis moment I think is a bad time to travel to Chile, especialmete to the south central region since the earthquake have been affected, roads and highways, transportation, and the mood is very different from that characterized the Chileans.
I think you might get help on a trip north of the country.
luck.

You should come to the north of Chile, considering situation in the south isn't good at all. I'd recomend you to visit La Serena and Elqui Valley ,a privileged place which is said to have the clearest skies in the southern hemisphere.

well, we just had an earthquake BUT in some places, like here in Arica, nothing was felt. lifes goes on as usual.
usualy downtowns are dangerous, here it is not. it is very safe to walk late at night in most streets..
contac the local sernatur office-tourism national service- (www.sernatur.cl) to know wich neighborhoods to avoid .
if u decide to come down to Arica, I can give u more tips

The good news is that in terms of personal safety(the threat of being hurt or killed), I believe Chile is safer than the US or Canada due to strict gun control laws and effective police forces. The bad news is that most crimes in Chile are opportunisic and impersonal. If you leave your backpack open, your bike unattended or your car unlocked, some people will take advantage of the opportunity to rob if they think they can get away with it. Most of time you wont even realize you have been robbed until hours later.
The places that are the most dangerous are Santiago Central, Valpariaso and Calama. I suggest that in these places not to show obvious signs of wealth, keep electronic items concealed and to keep conversational volume to a minimum. Again Valparaiso is beautiful and unique city but I have seen news reports of tourists being assaulted there. So, other than that you are good to go. (By the way I hope you have fun)
