Hi Nancy!
Well, I think Katherin gave you a very good answer. If you had been in Punta del Este, it´s time to visit Rocha now. As you see Rocha is quite like a "state" (like Florida, or California); and there you can find (and perhaps stay) in "La Paloma" which is one of the biggest towns there (easy to reach and with the mayor services available). However, I wouldn´t stay too long in La Paloma. As Katherin explains, you must visit those small fishermen-towns like "Cabo Polonio", "La Pedrera" and "Punta del Diablo". So It would be great if you could stay in CaboPolonio or Punta del Diablo (they are magic towns). If you could rent a car it would be easier to get from town to town, but I don´t know if you it exceeds your budget. Anyway I think you should be able to do it by bus. I am not "local" so I don´t know exactly this information.
I leave some links that may help you (although some are only in Spanish, I recommend you visit them. Any questions just ask me).

Hi Nancy!

Better Surfing spots in Uruguay are located in the Atlantic "Departamentos" (provinces) of Maldonado and Rocha up to the border with Brazil.

Katherin and Andrés gave you very detailed information of surfing spots in Rocha province.

I would just add some more spots in Maldonado, besides Punta del Este, that you already know. Going from west to east:

- San Francisco beach, close to Piriapolis
- Montoya and La Barra beaches, in La Barra, after Punta
- Manantiales and José Ignacio beaches

I suggest you have a look on these websites with surfing info for Uruguay:

http://www.olasyvientos.com
http://www.globalsurfers.com/country_details.cfm?land=Uruguay

Hope this info helps, have fun and welcome to Uruguay!
Guillermo

Hi Nancy,

I agree with everyone here that Rocha is the best place for surfing, specially if you've already visited Punta del Este a few times before, Rocha's beaches are a must visit if you are coming to Uruguay!

My advice would be to visit Punta del Diablo, La Paloma and Cabo Polonio.
Below I've listed some websites that I hope you can find useful!

La Paloma's Website: www.delapaloma.com.uy
Punta del Diablo's website: www.portaldeldiablo.com
Hostel in Punta del Diablo:
http://www.eldiablotranquilo.com/
Surf and Windsurf in Uruguay: http://oceanmind.net/blog/

Hope you have a nice trip to UY!
Cheers,
Alfonsina

Hello, as I have seen, you have got good answers from my neighbours.
I really think that Rocha is the best place to go, and in it, LA PALOMA has a very good school, which rents you all the equipment, and if you wish, you can take classes with the owner of the place. canariosurf@montevideo.com.uy, luck

Hi there,

Sure, sorry for the delay. Yes, definitively the best place is Rocha. You'll find huge waves, since it's open ocean. Cabo Polonio, one of the wildest spots, it's the best. Also you have Punta del Diablo but I think the best moment is not February but April, fall is here at that time and as you know the ocean changes. Feel free to reach me if there's anything else you need.

There is a surfer's shop called SunValley on the Brava beach Punta del Este, they're open year round and offer surfing lessons. Even if winter time the water could be very cold, they rent neoprene suits!
