The nice beaches are off the island on the east coast. They usually come in a package of 3 days 2 nights (should not be exceeding RM500), March to June is the best time to go there. Famous choices of islands are Perhentian Island and Redang Island at the South China Sea. You can take a flight to the nearest airport, bus will at least take 10 hours from KL, and then take a ferry to the island.
The next best choice would be Langkawi Island, it is situated at Andaman Sea bordering to Thailand, there is an international airport on the Island itself, you can book a cheap flight through AirAsia. On the island, you can then visit Cenang Beach and Tanjung Rhu, and also take a cable car to the hill top overseeing the Andaman Sea.
For KL, you can go shopping at the Suria KLCC and take nice photos with the Petronas Twin Towers, visit the China Town at Petaling Street, the National Planetarium, National Museum and National Monument. If you wish to visit cultural place, you can come to Penang Island or Melacca, they are just 4 hours and 2 hours drive away from KL.

There are great beaches at the coastal line of this state as well as nice beaches in the islands of sribuat archipelago in Mersing. Actually Malaysia got a lot of places that have beautiful beaches. Since you only got five days in Malaysia. I suggest you can go to Penang and also Langkawi. This two places is nearer to KL. You might stay 1 and half day in KL then the others days go to this two islands.
If you taking bus from KL to Penang is around 4 to 5 hours. If you are taking flight, is only 45 minutes. You can try log on to www.airasia.com to book a cheap flight. This is Malaysia budget air lines Company. In Penang, there is a lot of water sports activities in Batu Feringgih, you might spent your day over there. At night you can have a drink in the bars or pub beside the seaside. In Penang, you also can experience the nice food over there and also have a sight seeing in Penang since this city is one of the historical city that recognized by Unesco.
From Penang, you can take ferry to Langkawi Island. The ferry is around 3 hours if I am not mistaken. I took the ferry before but a few years ago so the time im not really sure. Langkawi Island is a free duty island so the chocolate, alcohol are cheaper than other places. The beaches in Langkawi are very pretty and fascinating. You can search net and see how pretty the scenery is.
In KL, you can go shopping and sight seeing tour around KL. Twin tower & KL tower is a place that you must go and visit. This is because this two building is resembles of Malaysia.
If you got anymore question, feel free to ask me.

If you're into scuba diving and snorkelling I would recommend Tioman Island. However since you have a limited budget and number of days stay the nearest beach to KL would be either Pangkor Island or Cherating in Kuantan. Whilst in KL you can go to Batu Caves, visit the pewter factory (Selangor Pewter), Chinatown, National museum, catch a musical or play at KL Pac (depending on the time), Petronas Twin towers, KL tower, shopping at many shopping malls, city tour by night, try out food at Jalan Alor, or watch fireflies at Kg Kuantan (depending on time). You could also make a day trip up to Genting Highlands where there's a casino and theme park.

Well, five days... thats a budgeted time all in its self!
I would first start by asking some questions, like...
1) Is this a touristy trip, where you would like to see everything you possibly can in 5 days, or are you coming to Malaysia to Relax?
If its relaxing you seek, then it would be an excellent idea to go to Langkawi for the majority of your stay, and make a 1-day trip in KL.
Langkawi is made up of 99 island, and has everything, from hotsprings and waterfalls, to clubbing and shopping. If youve ever seen a malaysian, island post card... chances are high that the photo is from one of the scenic beaches of Langkawi.
Langkawi has great places to stay, last time i went there, which was 2 weeks ago, i stayed at a rm20 lodge(really clean and neat). That very same day I visited a $400 resort.
I suggest you explore Langkawi, if you want the relaxing, fun beach holiday, return to KL for a day and take a day tour.
Daleel
*ps I love your city... the houses are unique, like wedding cakes ;)

Hey There! Welcome to Malaysia in advance. Firstly i would recommend you to visit Kuala Lumpur City for a day or two. If you are arriving at The Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), the bus fare to KL Central Terminal in KL is only RM9.00 (roughly USD 2.50). Once there, you may check into a variety of hotels ranging from budget hotels to luxurious 5-star ones. But for a standard stay, i would recommend Radius International Hotel, which is a 3-star hotel located in Bukit Bintang, the heast of Kuala Lumpur. A stay per night there would cost roughly RM150. Else, you may book in advance ONLINE at Tune Hotel KL which offers MUCH MUCH cheaper room rates per night. In KL you can visit nearby places of interest such as Petaling Street, if you would like to shop at bargained prices. For awesome food, head on to Jalan Alor at Bukit Bintang. If you wish to shop till you drop, there's Suria KLCC (which houses the world's tallest twin towers - The Petronas Twin Towers), Pavillion at Bukit Bintang, Berjaya Times Square and MidValley Megamall. If you wish to stay up late and enjoy KL's nitelife, head on to Jalan P. Ramlee, where there are a few clubs such as THE BEACH CLUB, Oblique, Thai Club etc. or Heritage Row at Jalan Doraisamy where Maison is located. As you mentioned that you expect to visit a nice beach in Malaysia, i would recommend you to head south to Port Dickson. It is the nearest and the most scenic beach from KL City. Its roughly a 2-hour bus ride down to Port Dickson (PD). Bus tickets can be easily purchased at Puduraya, the bus hub of Kuala Lumpur. No worries, the bus fare ain't expensive. Once at PD, as usual there are an array of hotels to choose from. Enquire with the hotels/resorts whether they have private beaches or public ones. But it doesn't matter much anyway because most of PD's beaches are clean and beautiful. Enjoy!

Comment by Alexander C. from Damansara, Malaysia
the nearest island from KL is Pulau Pangkor. The nearest beach would be in Port Dickson. I wont recommend you to go to Sarawak, because its on East Malaysia - which means you will have to FLY across the South China Sea. Langkawi, P. Perhentian, P. Redang are all situated on the northern portion of Malaysia. it will take at least half a day to get to one of the islands from KL. And by the way, DO NOT be fooled by taxi drivers in KL. If they do not charge using the meter fare, DO NOT BOARD the taxi. Taxi drivers like to charge extremely high cab fares to tourists because they like to take advantage of foreigners. No joke. The best alternative is pubic transport such as bus, LRT, KTM, etc. Jst make sure the taxis use the metered fare if u want to use the taxi service.

I think Penang will be a great choice..I personally love Penang, you'll get great food, you could walk along the town and marvels at beautifully constructed Chinese Temples, Indian shrine, Churches, Mosque and pre-war houses (if you are into history and culture) and after that......head towards Ferringhi beach to cool your heels. By flight (AirAsia recommended, it is just less than 45 mins) although buses (NICE company) stationed at the old train station offers excellent services as well (RM55 per trip I think).

Hello Vietnam and welcome to Malaysia.....
Good to hear that you decide to travel to Malaysia. Last year, myself and two friends of mine went to your country and to our surprise, you have a beautiful country and nice people too. I met a guy from the internet (less than a month) and he stays in Canton (south Vietnam). He is so helpful and taking us around the place. That was the first time I met him. We travelled from Saigon to Hanoi (More than 10 days)... All by public transports; buses and buses. Very exciting and challenging. We planned on saving our days like take a bus at night and arrived in the morning when arrived and then look for hotel and package or on our own for site seeing... I have too much to talk.....
This video is loaded by me when I was in Saigon during Vietnam Vs Thailand football match.

While. If oyu are looking for a nice beach, i will recommanded tht you visit our beautiful islands in Malaysia.
I would say you try the Langkawi Island. Is situated in Northern of Malaysia. You may choose to take flight or Bus. If taking flight, you will land on the island itself. But if you're taking bus, you will stop at Alor Setar and take a cab to Kuala Kedah and take a ferry in to the island.
Langkawi island is one of the duty free island in M'sia. where you can have beer for less than RM3 per can. and plenty of imported chocolates. There you may also visit The underwater world aquarium, which named to be the first in Malaysia. Pantai Cenang or rather Cenang beach in english is the best beach to visit. In the island itself, you may also visit to Perdana gallery, Historical spot and coral island for snorkling and diving. I hope you will enjoy your holiday.

You wont get beach in KL city. In KL, places that you should not missed are: -
1) KLCC Twin Tower
2) KL Tower
3) Bukit Bintang Road - Shopping Complexes around
4) Jalan Alor - Food Street
5) Petaling Street - Night Market
6) Central Market - Souvenir complex
7) Batu Caves - Indian temple that's in the Cave
8) Pasar Malam (different day, in different location of KL. Check with Taxi driver) - Local night market (selling food, clothing, acessories, shoe and sometime there are fish seller as well)
9) Genting Highland - An entertainment city situated above sea level of more than 5000 meter high. Must try.
If for nice beach, you may try Cherating (East Coast of Peninsular) It will take around 3-4 hours of Express bus journey to reach Kuantan and transit a local transportation (Taxi or bus) to reach Cherating. There are few resort or hotels of your choice - Club Med Cherating, Legend Hotel, Suria Hotel, Holiday Inn Cherating. Or hotels that slightly away from Cherating beach we have Swiss Garden Kuantan.
Penang will be another options for nice beach AND at the sametime you may also experience old building and structure and enjoy lots of nice foods and lots of tourist spots as well. It will take 4-5 hours of express bus journey from KL town to Penang Island itself. Just go to any search engine and type Penang island of Malaysia, you will find more information about this place and i bet with you, you will love this place.
Happy Holiday.
Weather here is a bit hot around 32-33C. Remember come with shorts and Tshirt. But some places require long pant and Color shirt and covered shoe.

The Malaysia East Coast is so riddled with so many breath-taking islands that there comes a point when it's hard to distinguish between each of the idyllic island destinations in in the top dozen or so.
In these cases, it's best to let other criteria come into play: budget, accessibility, tourism factor, activities etc.
If you're into gorgeous beaches and tranquil peace and quiet, then Dayang is the island of choice. Yes, it's quite remote, but that's the whole point eh :)
That said, Dayang is not very high-end; if you prefer a little more comfort, try Aur, it's just opposite.
Don't underestimate some of the mainland hotspots also. Tanjung Resang and Penyabong are gorgeous in their own right and offer plenty of activities, both land and sea-based. You could stay there and do a day/night trip to several islands, most of which are just a few hours away from the mainland.
Island-hopping trips are offered too, which seem to be the most bang for your buck if it's pristine little islands you're keen on. There's quite a few castaway isles too off Tanjung Resang, like Seri Buat. What better way to experience a tropical archipelago paradise than to explore it on foot or by canoe?
So yeah, plenty of choice. Best get booking :)
Happy travels!
P.S. I take it you're talking about US dollars, in which case you'll be happy to hear that your budget is very adequate.
