Hello Matijas- We will be visiting Split in early June. We then plan to rent a car and drive up to Zadar and then Rovinj. Would you mind answering a few questions for me? 1. How long will the drive take form Split to Zadar, and then how long form Zadar to Rovinj? 2. We are thinking of staying over night in either Rovinj or Zadar. Do you recommend one over the other as the place to spend the night? 3. After we visit Rovinj, we are thinking of driving to Piran. How long will the drive take? And, we are thinking of stopping in Groznjan and Motovun on the way. Does that itinierary make sense?? Thank you so much for your time and advice, Matijas. When you travel to Los Angeles, I am very happy to answer all of your questions :) Todd Stern

Split to Zadar, 2 hours drive, along the coastline. Less, if you choose newly bulit highway, which i wouldnt recommend. Driving by the coast will be one the highlights of the trip.

Zadar to Rovinj itll take cca. 5 hours, if you dont stop during the trip to enjoy the scenery, which i doubt. Most of the way you will drive on a new highway, untill you get to city of Rijeka, third largest Croatian city. Toll is cca 25 USD for both, highway and the tunnel through Ucka mountain, that divides Primorje and Istra.
Zadar would be your best choice for staying over night and enjoying the evening. City of Zadar, ancient and vivid place, is THE place to be in Croatia.

Visiting Groznjan, Motovun and, i would add, Vodnjan, makes perfect sense.
Places look like something from the Lord of the Rings movie. Beautful small villages situted on the top of the hills, overlooking Istria peninsula in all directions. A must.

Trip from Rovinj to Piran in Slovenia, is 1 and a half hour max. long, alltough, these three villages, Motovun, Groznjan and Vodnjan, are not on the shortest route, they are not far away from the main roads...

Enjoy in Croatia...

I agree with Milan,

Coastline road is also recently rebuild, so if you like 50mph choose that option, even you can drive faster at some locations, but this road where you are at some points only 5 meters from the sea is just breathtaking. And you will see a lot of islands from Split to Rijeka...

When you come to Rovinj (don't know how you guys are old) but Rovinj is the best plce to go out..in MONVI center. Also, if you are first time here..maybe you could visit on your way from Zadar to Rijeka National Park Plitvice ..and especially once you get to Rovinj come here and visit Pula (just 20 mins driving) where you would see some Antic Roman ruins in perfect condition..Amphitheatre, Augustus Temple, Golden Gate, Double Gate...;) maybe even some gladiators fights..:) I hope if this don't help you, that it will help someone other..:D

this is good link which can help you to make plans on road while you stay here:

BTW I was in Los Angeles in 2004., I mean I was all over from New York - MN - Las Vegas -Monumemnt Valley Grand Canyon, Florda, Washington all that by car..it was just so great..:o)) I wish you the same thing here:D

cheers, hrvoje

If you take the higway from Split to Zadar, it will take about 1.45 to 2.00 hours, while if you take the old road by the sea (more picturesque) it will take 2.30 hours. Zadar is a larger town than Rovinj, and places to stay are more numerous in Rovinj, and it is perhaps more tourist oriented. However, both are rich in cultural heritage and sites to visit.
From Zadar to Rovinj it is better to take the higway, drive around Rijeka and then take the main road through the Istra peninsula. Zadar - Rijeka: 3.30 - 4.00 hours. Rijeka - Rovinj: 2.00 hours. Piran is close to Rovinj, under an hour drive, but it is in the state of Slovenia, so you will have to cross the border, as Slovenia is an EU member. Groznjan and Motovun are exceptionally beautiful Medieaval Mediterranean towns and both worth seeing.

Greetings..

Yes, Rovinj is a really nice place.. In summer there are a few clubs, which are mostly for young people, but for older we can also find something interesting, with a style.. I have friends which did visit a lot of nice places, but they come every summer in Rovinj. For them, Rovinj is a magical city..
Near Rovinj is our famous Limski kanal, Vrsar and PoreÄ.. Many tourists like to visit them by ship, because are not far..

Hope you will visit us.. :)

I can see that you already got the basic answers about your planned itinerary.
So few information about Rovinj: It's a stunning place and I'm sure that you will not have any trouble to find a suitable accommodation there. If you are more keen for hotel accommodation you don't want to miss to spend a few days on hotel 'Park' - three star hotel, with a stunning view on old town, 10 min walking distance from the hotel. Make your reservation in an advance! While you are in the town you can easy visit two nearby islands using a well organized public transfer (you have a boat almost every hour): the island of St. Katarina, opposite of the town ( 5 min long distance - 10 kn one way ticket) or Red Island (15 min transfer - 15 kn one wy ticket). On the both of the islands you'll find, besides hotel/s, public shingley and rocky beaches, restaurants, pizzerias, caffe bars.... On the Red Island don't miss a lunch/dinner in the romantic athmosphere of the former castle. In the town of Rovinj you'll have a lot of fun, as almost every night there is something going on, festivals, concerts take a part...
You mentioned few picturesque places in the central/continental part of the peninsular: Grožnjan and Motovun. Go for it! You can't decide which one is a more beautiful. While you are near Motovun, stop in Livade, famous by the biggest truffle in the world ever found (chech the story in the Guinness book of the records). Stop in the restaurant Zigante and enjoy in the famous dish which makes Istrian people proud. And don't miss famous local white wine Malvazija. While you're in Rovinj, take a boat trip with a local fishermen to Lim Canal. You'll have the opportunity to enjoy in sailing between beautiful steep green slopes of Canal, to see how people cultivated a mussels there, to swim in brackish water, to enjoy in excellent lunch prepared on the boat by captain: grilled fish, and wine which will flow...have a fun :)

Hey .
So if you drive along the coastline you will drive about 2 and a half hours . It's depending of the traffic . Here and there you can take a small break to enjoy the scenery I think that Zadar is the best place to stay overnight because you have a litlle bit of everything there , Cafe's restaurant's the old town but also you have the pozdrav sunce what you can find there . write Pozdrav sunce Zadar on the internet and you will see what it is . You can translate it like greetings of the sun .

To drive from Rovinj to Piran you will need a little more then 1 hour.

Greetings
