Depends how long is your layover. You can take the train to Amsterdam Central Station and there in the vicinity there are loads of canal boats to take you around Amsterdam. There are different ones..so depending on how long you are staying you can hop on one and get a quick look, but next time visit Amsterdam and really see this beautiful city. There are several where you can stop and get off and see a particular site and then get the next boat and see another site. Either way, it's a good way to get a quick overview. Have fun!

There is a trainstation at the airport so if you take the train it will bring you to Amsterdam Central in 13 to 19 minutes for EUR 6.70 (roundtrip). The canaltours are just outside the trainstation. Enjoy your trip!

Hey I have just returned from amsterdam, and it really dependes what you are looking for.
I have stayed in a youth shelter that is very nice confy and has a very nice ambience, but its alchool and drug free (so if you are looking for this then defenetly not the place). But in case you are interested is called City Shelter "the guys that work there are great" even tougth is a christian shelter they dont make you do christian things (since im not religious).
You arrive to central station and take the metro to niewmarkt, leave the metro station to your left hand go up stairs and you will find a restaurant that looks like a church... cross the canal and voila is going into the first tiny steet you will see.
Location is great because is 20 meters away from albert hijn (supermarket) you are in the chinesse part of the city and the red ligth dristrict is rigth there really 50 metter away and the centrer of the town is 5 minutes walk. I Really recomed it.

There are various places to stay. it's easy to book a hotel room using www.bookings.nl you can easily book hotels by rating or by price. I use it all the time. From the airport its a short trainride to the center of Amsterdam.

there are many possibilities and maybe it comes in handy when you search on price range. you can stay in youth hostels for 15 to 30 euros a night (flying pig for example) or get a real hotelroom with all the fancy stuff. whatever you do, when you arrive in amsterdam just in front of the station there is a vvv (tourist information) which can show you some options. maybe couchsurfing is something for you (it means you sleep at private houses which join the project couchsurfing and that is most of the times for free.

I would like to recommand the Quentin Arrive hotel. (check website http://www.quentinhotels.com/Arrive/aboutus.html). A 1 star hotel, good located! Some Dutch hotelbrokers as eg. Hotelstunter.nl has special offers for this hotel, starting with only € 22,- per person per night. breakfast not included, but tax is. Enjoy your stay in Amsterdam. And do consider going down South and visit my hometown Breda!
