I don't want to travel too far from the airport. IS there any place close to Schipol airport where I can take a canal ride? Or maybe take a train to some place, enjot the ride an take a train back?

Best is to catch the train to Amsterdam CS (Central Station) which takes about 20 minutes. In front of the station you'll find 2 boat companies. 1 hour canal cruise costs between € 11 and €12 p.p. Or you hire a private guide (like me) who will pick you up at the airport, show you the city and takes you back in time to the airport again.

The short answer to your first question is: No. Schiphol Airport is situated outside of Amsterdam and the canals are in the old city center. It is at least a 20-30 minutes taxi ride downtown, and much more during rush hour.

It really depends on how much time you have, AND where you are traveling to. You need to take into account passing customs and security twice if your leaving the airport.

The canal rides take about an hour, and there are a few just outside the main train station. Some depart every 20 minutes, some take longer. There is a regular train connection from the airport to the Central Station.

I would say that realistically you'll need at least some 5 hours to do it.

I also calculated you would need around five hours to be on the safe side. You can take a train to the city centre though (every ten minutes, takes about twenty)and walk around the canals at your own pace, they are right by the stations. Most boat tours take one- one 1/2 hours and they only depart at certain times.

There is a travel agent in Schiphol (after customs) aimed at transferring passengers. They offer trips right to your wished and the time you have availabe. I don't know their name nor their quality since I never used them- I live here. I think you can google them quite easily, all their communications are in English. I do vaguely remember that they had a 3 hour tour in guaranteed four hours, so that might be good for you. I also remember that they were pretty expensive.

Good luck!

The best and fastest way to enjoy a canal tour in Amsterdam is by taking the train from Schiphol(the airport) to Amsterdam central Station. Just outside the airport there are a lot of boats waitin for ya!!! The price is about 12 euros one hour trip. You can choose from a variety of trips from a economy to a luxurious one.
I hope you will enjoy amsterdam!!!

It all depends on how long your stopover is, the train to Amsterdam Central takes around 15 mins, from the train station at the airport about 7 euro return ,the canal tours take 1 hour 7 to 12 euro two directly outside the station and more 100m ahead and on the left, you will need at least 4 hours to acheive this, hope this helped

Take a look at www.ns.nl for trains and http://www.lovers.nl/Programmes/Default.asp?LocaleID=1033 for canalcruises.

How many time do you have? And with the ticket and visa you own, are you allowed to leave the airport?

You might be better taking a quick trip to Harlem or Weesp. Both are beautiful historic towns around 10 minutes on the bus from Schiphol.
