I am Portuguese and went to Ukraine this Summer, drove across Europe with my car and had a fantastic time over there.
Let me know when you go there and maybe we could do it together.
That would be fantastic.
I have family in Zhitomyr and you should go there. Also I have a friend that has an Hotel in Novograd Bolinsky.
Take care

Hello, It is great to hear that you are interested in visiting the Eastern Ukraine. There are many places that are worth seeing there, too. I have an awesome couple of guides in Kiev, who are my great friends and co-workers - Nick and Natasha. Very intelligent people, and I have numerous excellent reports/testimonials about their work. Also, we can assist you with all the trip reservations, car rent and all the necessary services, so you will not need to think about any arrangements during your trip. Please contact me by phone +1 303 4955384 (US vonage phone that rings in Ukraine), it is free to call - and we can discuss the details. Also, my email is irins@discover-ua.com. Hi,
Its nice idea to visit more and more places U have not been jet. As for me I do not share the idea of visiting Dnipropetrovsk. If I were U I would visit Odessa or Chernevtsy. As for me U will have more variety of choice what to do there. Besides the destination between Odessa and Chernevtsy is about 300 or less. If U still decide to visit Dnipropetrovsk, U have to plane what U will be doing there. From all cities U have mentioned U have been to, this one is still keeping communistic values in architecture, city planning (it takes a long time to get from one place to another-large city)People are very friendly there. They will be glad to see U again and again.
The best choice is Ur choice=)

I see many people have answered you but nobody proposed you to visit Donetsk. It's nearby Dniepropetrovsk and there are a lot of interesting places to see here. If you are interested in visiting this city, contact me and you are welcome.

if you don't have a specific reason to go NOW, don't do it.. the flu is in full swing, and the weather is not the best to enjoy Ukraine, and Dnepropetrovsk as well, roads can be dangerous also for driving.
So- if you HAVE to go- get someone you know to drive around with you, But I would rather go to Western Ukraine than Dnepropetrovsk

Very wise decision in regard to renting the car and charting your own journey!!! May I advise as obligatory option :) car navigation and pre-booked hotel reservations on the way of your trip. Personally for me each city is unique and deserve a good look through. The stop-overs on the way is also give valuable insite.
