Mainly becos after a very busy and stressful day there is always a choice to unwind or get stressed out more by being in traffick. Lagosians realise that partying and chilling out brings balance to the equation of the day. However not only lagosians like to party. It's part of the culture of western nigerians.

D answer is basically 3-fold - historical,cultural/social.
Historically, Lagos has been and still is, d commercial/political nerve center of Nigeria 4 over a century now...so u expect a lot of parties commemorating this or that... a Lagosian, we must note, is not necessarily a yoruba man but, anyone inhabiting this megapolis according to a UN classification. Culturally.socially, most of those around are yoruba people. They celebrate almost any achievement with a party. They even party anywhere two or three are gathered: accident survival, new born baby, freedom from learning a trade or vocation, house-warming, promotion at work, weddings, funerals, birthday, memorials, end-of-year parties, aare just a few to add to d regular, xmas, new year and sallahs... so whther u like it or not, u must be included in the groove! a lot of people in lagos survive from various affinities in the society. For instance, a naming ceremony is done on the 8th day of the child's birth...so if it falls on a tuesday wednesday or thursday, party they must, even for gatecrashers who are never treated as such! Invitees even bring on their own delicacies to support their host-friends, and food and drinks are always in plentiful supply...then the music!

Lagos being what it is... from commercial nerve-centre of Nigeria and a rapidly growing mega-city, the people of Lagos work hard and when it is time to party, they party hard. Its a natural thing about Lagosians!

Lagos like most metropolitan cities is made up of a large population of diverse cultures. Like most metropolitan cities, parties are a way of interacting and relaxing after a hectic work week. Activities that are done consistently overtime become part of the culture of the people. An example that is just brewing is the Calabar Carnival in December of every year. Overtime, it would become part of the culture of the city and may no longer require government intervention. The trend in Abuja on the other hand is night clubbing and hanging out. On weekend nights, the streets are littered with cars at various clubs, bars and hangouts. Bottom line is that Lagosians are not doing anything out of the ordinary. They are just being metropolitan.
