As Teresa says, all is easy. You will want to drive up to the base camp of Teide and pobably go down again on the other side to make a nice circular trip.

If you like football Tenerife are now back in the top league and playing attractive football but in reality there is so much to do on the island that you should choose what interests you and drive there. Good, quiet roads most everywhere on the island. Enjoy!

Hi

There is one good motorway that stretches (nearly) the whole way around the island TF1. Depends if you are flying into North or South Airport (Reina Sofia) You should be able to rent a car just as you come out of arrivals and they will issue you with a map. Its not hard..you will always be in sight of the sea and Teidi the volcanoe as you travel on the motorway (TF1)

There are some great trips up into the mountains... The routes are easy as the island is very small andOne of the best ways to discover the island is to rent a car, driving around and finding your favourite places. As with most things on Tenerife, car hire is a very competitive market. There are many car rental companies and they all seem to offer more or less the same. If you book in advance by fax to the company or through your tour operator you can be sure that you'll get what you want. Internet offers tend to be the best priced.
To rent a car you will need a valid driving license (of course!), passport, and you have to be at least 21 years old. Make sure that the price you pay includes mileage and insurance. Also check how you have to leave the car as regards Gas etc

Most of the best places to see are within a short distance and easy to get too..all should be shown on the maps you have and clearly indicate the routes.

Hope this helps
