I want to hike up to the Monsterrat but I don't want to pay to go on a tour. I was thinking about taking the train to the base, and hike?

The train to Montserrat departs from the Pl. Espanya station.
If you want to hike up to the monastery you'll have to get off at Montserrat-Aeri station, then follow the path across the road. It's about 45min to 1h upstairs (yes, it's mostly stairs). Or you can take the cablecar that departs from there every 20min.
Another option is going one stop further to Monistrol Vila, then connect with the rack train (cremallera). But you can't really hike up from there.
Take into account that the Monastery is NOT the top of the Mountain. Once there you can take the path to Sant Jeroni, the highest peak: it's almost a 3h walk (again plenty of stairs), but you can save half of it if you take the Funicular de Sant Joan from the Monastery.

Follow Marta's advice for the transport and when you are in the Monastery, you'll find a Tourist office that can provide you information or even a little map to follow different hiking options. You may go to Sant Jeroni, but could also go to the grottoes (Collbató is also 3h distance from the Monastery) or you could go to the old chapel (and now refuge) of sant Pere (above the monastery) You should also take some information before from the web site http://www.montserratvisita.com There you can select NATURA and then ITINERARIOS. Have some good hiking but be careful!!

Many people take the train and then they hike or they ride the bike up to the monastery. It is a very nice path and you will enjoy of a very nice view and I am shure that you will find more hikers in Montserrrat.ç
Next to the monastery there are many restaurants , cafeterias and also cablecars that can take you higher.

You can take the railways FGC to Monistrol de Montserrat and then hike up to the Abbey and have other trips around there. I send you the web side of the Natural Park and the railways.

Hello, if you want to go to Montserrat, you have to take a train from Espanya Square station, you must take the R5 line that goes to Manresa. The line belongs to FGC (catalonian trains). There is one train every hour that goes to Montserrat, and it takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to get there. When you arrive there, you can visit the Monastery, and the visit is free of charge. You can go upstairs too, by walking some stairs, and you will see the Virgin of Montserrat (la Moreneta), to whom is dedicated all the complex. You can touch or kiss the head of the Virgin. Catalans are very proud of their Moreneta, She is their protector. When you get out of the Monastery, you can visit the valley (because the Monastery has been built in a narrow valley), and you can also stop for a moment to buy gifts, or to eat, if you are hungry: there are some restaurants and some shops there. If you want to go higher, there are cablecars that can take you to the mountains. When you arrive to Montserrat, you will note a religious silence: this is typical of Montserrat. Enjoy !
