Can we hike part of the Gold Trail without a guide? Where is the best place to start for a moderate hike that might lead to waterfalls?

If I were you I'd start from Cunha, SP, and from there hike down toward Paraty. That's where all the cascades are.

And the Gold Trail, starts in Minas Gerais towards Rio de Janeiro, not Amazonas...
