Monteverde and Arenal are good options. Assume you go to Arenal first, then make the lake crossing to Montreverde, then go to Manuel Antonio and from there back to San Jose. I personally do not recommend a single female traveling alone going to the Caribbean side.
September is the rainy season but it doesn't rain every day and generally in the afternoon and usually stops by dinner time. I love the rainy season, everything is green and lush, it's not as hot and the Pacific Ocean is flat calm and warm water. Good luck, enjoy,

Yes, you should definitely visit the Caribbean coast of CR. You can safely visit Tortuguero National Park with any one of the following lodges:
-Mawamba Lodge, Laguna Lodge(these are on the beach next to the village), Pachira Lodge, Evergreen Lodge, etc. You can look up their websites o thru Google.

You could also visit the South e Eastern part of our Caribbean safely by going with a group or a package tour thru:
_www.actuarcostarica.com, or try ATEC(Google them).

There is also a very nice jungle Tent -jungle lodge in the middle of the Manzanillo Gandoca Reserve called Almonds & Corals Lodge. The beach is sheer paradise. They can arrange all transportation if you require it. There is also a possibility of combining your visits with Interbus(shuttle service) or with Grayline Tours shuttle service to /from Arenal/Monteverde & Puerto Viejo de LimĂłn.

Pura Vida!

Go to th Caribbean, it is safe! Cahuita or Puerto Viejo, both are good destinations. If you need transportation within the country call me to 8880-0517.
Regards, Emilio

Answer 2 (299 days ago)

I think the destinations you have chosen are excellent for that time of the year. Monteverde and Arenal both have influence of the Caribbean so weather is similar. It may rain a little during the evening but not as much as in the Pacific Coast. In Monteverde stay at Country Lodge, in Arenal stay at San Bosco and in Puerto Viejo stay at Totem. If you need transfers there is a regular shuttle service that goes to main destinations. For further information call me to 8880-0517. Regards, Emilio.

Luis Jimenez is right about bein' careful on the Caribbean cast. Still, Puerto Viejo is beautiful and there are many wonderful hotels. All up and down the Pacific Coast are great beaches and hotels. I'd recommend the Hotel Diversion Tropical in Playa Brasilito adjacent to the beautiful Playa Conchal with a 5 star hotel and the hotel security. Not far from Arenal you could visit the Rio Celeste (or Blue River) with very nice hotels.

Is there such a safe place in the world now days? Visit the caribbean side it is beautiful, I go there as often as I can and I've never had any bad experience. Enjoy a nice walk on the beach and cliffs in Manzanillo/Gandoca. Dance the night away in Puerto Viejo... If you go to Jaco it will be like going to the states KFC, Subway...etc. The good thing about the caribbean is that many of the places are owned by locals either costaricans or foreigners, so you may be waited by the boss. Great food, costumer service well...it is not great, but I do not care too much about that as long as the food is great. And it is.

Enjoy yourself...

Tara, the Caribbean side has a better weather in September and October especially in the southern Atlantic beach areas of Manzanillo, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo.
Another place that you can find interesting is Ostional in Guanacaste because around September the 15th you can observe mass nesting of Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) sea turtles at Playas Nancite and Ostional when up to 40,000 turtles are nesting at that time of year.
Great experience like this one makes your vacation unique, try the hot springs at Arenal or at RincĂłn de la Vieja, RĂo celeste, playa conchal, la paz waterfall.

There are many hotels where the security is primordial, and I'm sure you can make some friends there, I travel alone sometimes, is safe and a good way to know different cultures, people and discover exsotic places. If you need a car to travel around you can contact me for a super discount in your rent at cindy@4x4rentacar.com

Costa Rica boasts approximately five percent of the biodiversity in the entire world. Fortunately, the county has its act together. Twenty-five percent of its total territory is protected in a series of wildlife refuges, parks, and biological reserves. The national parks are more frequently visited by tourists, and provide a greater deal of activities and amenities.

Because of its progressive thinking, Costa Rica offers pure scenery at its best. It’s a patchwork nature-nation of cloudforests swirling with fog, rainforests, mangrove swamps, pastureland, and dry tropical forests, all ringed with innumerable beaches.

Costa Rica is a bird-watcher’s paradise. As for mammals, the largest ones, like sloths, jaguars and tapirs, are shy and rarely glimpsed. But you’ll more than likely see a monkey or a whole troop of them, swinging through the canopy overhead. You’ll hear the howlers for sure—-their rumbling calls can be heard up to two miles away!
Costa Rica is a country that can accommodate travelers seeking every level of comfort. Budget hostels and guesthouses are everywhere, and local bus travel is dirt cheap, but luxury travelers will also find resorts and amenities of top American quality. If you like, you’ll never have to walk through a local village at all—but where’s the fun in that?
San Jose, Costa Rica's capital, definitely has its enthusiasts. If you're a budget traveler and need a place to stay, try Costa Rica Backpackers Hostel.

San Jose, Costa Rica's capital, definitely has its enthusiasts. If you're a budget traveler and need a place to stay, try Costa Rica Backpackers Hostel.

The most common Costa Rica travel itinerary is Forest--> Beaches, in that order. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is the most popular destination for canopy tours and zip lining, like those offered by Aventura Canopy Tours. Stay in Santa Elena for some local color and better prices. Nearby La Fortuna, beside Lake Arenal and the Arenal volcano, is another great destination. Visit a hot spring like Baldi Termae, and enjoy steaming pools and swim-up bars.

On the coast, travelers frequent every beach along the Nicoya Peninsula, from Playa Hermosa to Playa Tamarindo down to Montezuma. Other popular beaches are Jaco and Manuel Antonio. Scuba diving and snorkeling is spectacular anywhere, but the best is found far offshore, at Costa Rica’s remote island reserves like Tortuga and Cocos—-book a boat trip from any major city.
