I like Windy Hills at Portola Valley. The parking lot is at Portola Road near Alpine Road. The trail goes up 3 miles to Windy Hills by Skyline Boulevard, then you can either loop back down and take the same trail down. You see the valley and the bay.

Another nice trail is what the locals call "The Dish." It is by Stanford University (west of the campus). The loop can be 4 miles or 6 miles. This is closer to Mountain View than Windy Hills.

in my opinion, Fort Cronkite in Marin county just north of San Francisco is great

That is not within 20 miles of Mountain View. :)

A great place for hiking is Wilder Ranch State Park in Santa Cruz. It is a little more than the 20 mile radius, but well worth the trip. There are several different hiking trails. My favorite is along the coast....it is a beautiful walk. Several more difficult hikes go up into the hills. This is the perfect time to visit Santa Cruz.
