Visit to Popovaca to look at family history
Web
My name is Cheryl Tomac. I am 1/2 Croatian. My grandparents came from Croatia. I have their baptismal certificates. From a relative (the son of my great Aunt Mary Sandolich), I learned that we have relatives or friends of relative in Popovaca. My brothers and I are traveling to Croatia in June or July of 2010 and want to come to Popovaca. I am told their names of the relative or friends are Ivanka Novacic at Koladvorska 6841317 with a phone number of 38-45-70-421; also Medurgvica Gonnigi Yelenska 41317. When we come is there someone in town that could translate for us and/or help try to find out anymore about our heritage. Where could we stay there? I would appreciate any information you can give. Thank you. Cheryl Tomac

Hi,
I think your data is not correct, but I found this:
If you go to site:
http://imenik.tportal.hr/show?lang=en&action=pretraga
And type: "Novačić" in "Who"
"Popovača" in "Where", 5 results show and closest to your info is:
Mr. Alojz Novačić
Kolodvorska 45 street
44317 Popovača
phone: +385-44-670-421 (note 70-421 in number)
BINGO !!! Why not give him a call?
From your data: phone 38-45-70421
38 - was pre-fix for Yugoslavia, now it is +385 for Croatia
45 - city code for Popovača, nowdays 44, when you call i.e. from Zagreb, than drop +385 and dial 044-phone number
670-421 - when number of telephones increased, to simplify the procedure of connecting to new, digital service, Post office simply added prefix 6 to existing numbers.
Also,if you type: "Novačić" in "Who"
"Gornja Jelenska" in "Where?"
Result would be telephone numbers of 11 persons named Novačić in Gornja Jelenska.
At least some af them (if not all) are your relatives, but I believe, Mr. Alojz is the one to start with.
Good luck !
P.S. and please inform us of the results :-)

Hey Cheryl,
It is too bad no one from Zagreb has responded. Popovaca is close to Zagreb and you can stay there. There are plenty of places. I am in Bosnia and will not be here when you come to Croatia. But I am thinking if you are interested, I have a friend back in the US who is 100% Croatian, but grew up in the states. I know that her parents still live in zagreb. I am sure she would like to chat with you. I do not want to put her mail or number here since I have not asked her if I could. If you write to me at ruznic@gmail.com I can connect you. I think she could give you some ideas.

I think you should go first to a church where they were baptised, and from there you continue...maybe the priest will have some more info.
Good luck!
