It depends how long you have in Wellington but Te Papa is a great visit and free unless you want to leave a donation. The parliament building and the beehive has free tours, if your interested in Politics and architicture. There are many art galleries. Mt Victoria or Te Ahumairangi Hill Lookout there is a cable car up to the look out which is an experience. A waterfront walk. Botanic Gardens. There is rockclimbing, inland skating and kayaking. There is the Zealandia: The Karori Sanctuary Experience with endangered species.
I hope this helps and wish you a great visit to Wellington and NZ

All the below and a walk along Oriental Parade is a perfect way to enjoy a mid morning or early afternoon stroll taking in the magnificent harbour views. Dont worry if its raining or the wind is howling go and do it in any weather as you get to see Wellington from a different perspective and its GOOD!

Cuba street is nice collections of interesting shops and with interesting shops come interesting people. The Art Gallery is worth a trip as well. If you are going to Zealandia, suggest you book the night time time tour to so some Kiwi spotting.
Have you thought about visiting the Sealion colony? Or Kapiti Island just North of Wellington.
