Am not sure, my question is how would you leave the US for kenya without a visa. in case the visa expires when you are on this side am sure you would get an extension or leave the country for a place like Ethiopia for a few days and you'll automatically get it when you come back

A passport and visa are required. Visas should be obtained in advance, although airport visas are available. Travelers who opt to obtain an airport visa should expect delays upon arrival. There is a fee for the visa, whether obtained in advance or at the airport. Evidence of yellow fever immunization may be requested. Travelers to Kenya and neighboring African countries should ensure that the validity of their passports is at least six months beyond the end of their intended stay, and that their passport contains sufficient blank pages for visas and immigration stamps.
Travelers may obtain the latest information on visas as well as any additional details regarding entry requirements from the Embassy of Kenya, 2249 R Street NW, Washington, DC 20008, telephone (202) 387-6101, or the Kenyan Consulates General in Los Angeles and New York City. Persons outside the United States should contact the nearest Kenyan embassy or consulate.

Definitely make sure you have some sort of official immunization documentation to show that you have the correct vaccinations to enter the country.
But otherwise, all you need is a passport and 50 dollars. And a little time, getting your visa done at the airport never seems quick when you just want to claim your bag and get out of all the queues.

Yes, you can get a visa on arrival. The easily acquired visa is the tourist visa, valid for 3 months at a cost of USD 50. Other Visa's have to be applied in advance. This would be working or Gratis Visas.

See http://www.immigration.go.ke/index.php?id=45 for a list of countries whose citizens can acquire a visa at the port of arrival - USA is amongst them. So the answer is YES.
Visa cost is US $50 (recent dollar notes only - this is valid for the whole of Kenya and East Africa, if you come with old notes they will not be accepted) for single entry. If you intend to travel within East Africa (Uganda, Tanzania) and then return to Kenya, this is considered as a single entry (as long as you stay within the allowed period of 3 months).
Enjoy your stay! Karibu Kenya! (Welcome to Kenya)
PS: Please note that visa costs on the airport can be paid in dollars ONLY (until recently euros were accepted as well, but this has changed). No need to bring passport size photographs - Immigration at the airport is nowadays equipped with webcams! (Prepare yourself for long queues though, as this means a time-consuming process).

You can get a visa at the airport and by the way the price has just been reduced by 50% to $25, but not sure when that kicks in. Be advised that getting the visa at the airport is a slow process despite the new "computerised" system

It's possible to get a visa at the airport because your country is listed as one whose citizens ca get visas at the point of entry. But it would be a good idea to contact the Kenyan Embassy in DC for further clarifications.
