I second that - testaccio is great. Well connected, a nice outdoor market, and some of the best pizza in rome at da Remo. San Lorenzo is good too (Tram Tram is a good food recommendation there). Garbatella is nice too - cool architecture, and if you have kids, the area around Corso Trieste is good as there's there are two parks nearby, Villa Torlonia and Villa Paganini, as well as good food and good outdoor markets (on via Chiana and at Piazza Alessandria and on via Metauro).
