most places(big malls/hypermarkets)accept EGP/VISA payment only, some others accept USD but I think you may need to have your GBP exchanged,or simply go to an ATM and get some cash in EGP whenever you need,as it's the easiest to use EGP anywhere in Egypt(small shops,bazars,...etc)

Hi David,

In Egypt it is better to spend in EGP.
To excahnge from sterling to EGP it is better to do in Egypt rather than in the UK because in Egypt they do not deduct % commission as in UK, so you have several options:
1- To exchange at airport in Egypt when arrive.
2- To exchange from banks out of the airport (during working hours from 8.30am - 2.00 pm but closed over weekend; Fridays & Saturdays.
3- To excahnge from exchange shops available in the streets wherever you go ( daily from 10am - 10 pm & working 7days a week).

Please be noted the exchange rate is written on bulletin either in banks or exchange shops and they do not deduct % commission as in UK (simply what is written is what you get in hands).

Todays rate (22nd of September) 1 Sterl = 9.0796 EGP

Hope that would be helpful.

David, there are possibly hotels in Sharm of Hurghada that will take sterling or US$ but it is far better (and safer) to use Egyptian pounds (LE) everywhere. This is the only currency you will be able to use in shops, malls and in everywhere in Cairo (as far as I know).

You will find plenty of places to change your money (do it here in Egypt), hotels, banks, at the airport. Government banks close at 2.00 pm and are closed Sat and Sunday, other non-govt banks are open until 5.00 pm. ATMs are all over Cairo and give out LE but in larger notes. You need to get hold of small notes, especially 1 and 5 pound notes to use as tips for small services (expected everywhere - see my advice about tipping

My advice is only use LE.

Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to be in touch if I can be of any mroe assistance.

Hi,
Welcome to Egypt in advance.
I think it will be better for you to use Eyptian pounds instead for your local expenses & you can use sterling at hotels for your accommodation bookings.
Best regards
Hala

Foreign currency is easy to use anywhere in Egypt but for the majority of people who want the best rate of exchange for ease of shopping and entertainment - change their sterling when they arrive to Egypt. The Bank at the airport as you arrive offers a good rate of exchange, plus there are banks and cash points throughout the town. The rates vary in different banks so look for the best deal when you arrive. You are welcome to e-mail me or check out my website ‘the book Sharm’ when you are due and I will tell you the rate of the day. If you are coming to Sharm el Sheikh I can point you in the direction of the best banks. Linda
