The best way to go is to join us on an organized" tour" whre we take you there, including the entrance fee , and then we have three way put pick ups, like 1:00, 2:00 or 3:00 Am and this is a very good way to mingle with locals and get a good feelimng od the vib of Carnival. It happens every friday, so let me know when you come so I can help you out.

Cheers!!

Well, Mangueira is getting very touristy nowadays, I would better take my guests to local samba schools like Viradouro, Portela or Estacio, there you interect more with the natives!

But I guess you already have been to Rio since you posted your questions a long time ago.

It is always important to know about visitor's opinion, please write to my email donrafainrio@yahoo.es and visit my blog, http://donrafaguestsinrio.blogspot.com, lots of nice pictures taken in Rio and many other different parts of Brazil. Go there and tell me your opinion!!!

As my fellow cariocas have already told you, the best way to go to Mangueira is with a group. Mangueira is a crime ridden zone, where you will find yourself surrounded by more people with rogue guns, than you would if you were in Iraq.

If you want to be safer, go to samba parties in Zona Sul, or at Rio das Pedras.

hi, if you have the opportunity to get to know other tourists while you're around you can just get together, buy only the tickets and go by taxi. Hostels are the best place to meet such people. I'm pretty sure you're gonna also meet locals who can advise you on how to do it. Be more independent.

Rehearsals are quite safe, but getting there might be tricky. As others said, you could just get a taxi with other people, but Iwould suggest you to go to a hostel front desk and ask them for tours. It shouldn't be expensive. Just for you to know how to check if they are over charging, the taxi to mangueira from ipanema should cost 25/30 reais and ticket for rhe rehearsal about 20. Anything above 50 would be too expensive since you will share a transport with other people.

Hi, Mick;
As you see by the answers received: That's like asking -"how do I fall off a log?"- or -"how do I eat pie?"-.
And why not say: I, too, should suggest you contact ME?
