Suggestions for Bosnia itinerary

avatar

Web

Hi, I will be in Bosnia around May 2011 and would like suggestions for my itinerary. The general idea is to start in Sarajevo, then travel on to Mostar, then back to Germany via Dubrovnik. From Sarajevo and Mostar I`d like to do some daytrips (like Sutjeska National Park, Highland Villages). Could you give me advice what the most worthwhile destinations in the vicinity of Sarajevo and Mostar are ? Also, I`m curious about the Highland Villages near Sarajevo - are they worth visiting, what do you do there, can you hike there or do you need a guide (due to land mine risk?), is it possible to do them as a daytrip or should one rather stay here for a night ?

Hello, Michael!
All you asked about I offer to my clients and have a lot of experience in leading such tours, so I know that one day trip is not enough for visiting Mostar, Sutjeska, Sarajevo, mountains etc. So, i suggest stay here for a night. Yes, there are still land mines on mountains around Sarajevo, they are marked and it is better not to go out of the roads ( for example Mountain Trebevic where are the remains of bob sledge track from Winter Olympics Sarajevo'84 or mountains Igman and Bjelašnica ( village).**

It all depends how you like to travel. If you are stationing in Sarajevo and Mostar and want to go around, to best use your time I would rent a car. You can see a lot just driving around (this applies for sightseeing outside of urban areas; in town I would recommend using your feet and transport to get around if you really want to get feel of the places. Both Sarajevo and Mostar are very walkable). If you decide on renting a car and driving around be aware that road signage is not always that good.
SARAJEVO:
In Sarajevo visit churches, mosques, synagogues. Also the must see is the Sarajevo Haggadah housed in Zemljaski Muzej in Sarajevo. For this trip to get a feel of Bosnia and Herzegovina, I suggest you get a book "People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks. This Haggadah is unique, and if you'd like to know why you can read that fictionalized account. You do have to arrange with the museum to be shown original as they keep it in safe.
Around Sarajevo: sure Lukomir is cool, Visoko and Franciscan monasteries in Fojnica River Valley (Fojnica, Kraljeva Sutjeska...) as there are Tekkes around Fojnica, but that would be much harder to find. Pyramids if you would like to get involved into are there pyramids in Bosnia or not arguments :-)
Mountains around Sarajevo are magical visiting villages or not (as all BH mountains are). If you travel between Sarajevo Mostar in a daylight you will be able to get a bit sense of that even just on the road/train from one place to another. When You are in Mostar go to Pocitelj, Dervish Tekkee in Blagaj on the Buna river, if you are for bit longer (but not too long of a drive, day trip), go to Kravice waterfalls on Trebizat river, Blidinje-Risovac (there is ski area there where in May out of season you can stay very cheap something like 15-20$ a night.
Or sign-up with the tour agency and see what you can in time frame you have. BH is hidden gem no spectacularity, but a lots of mystery.
Enjoy Bosnia and Herzegovina. :-)

We recommend the following:
Sarajevo:
city tour:
Baščaršija (old town), eat the local specialty, (čevapi) chevapi.
Bezistan, Emperors Mosque, the place of the assassination, City Hall, despite house .. also recommend Avaz twist tower with a beautiful view of almost the whole of Sarajevo.
Van Sarajevo: Bosnia source, or going to one of the mountains .. Bjelasnica, Jahorina and Igman.
Very nice to go to the waterfall Grasshopper which is near Sarajevo. About 3 hours walk one way.
For this I recommend a stay of two dana. For all this you can allow a tourist guide.

Mostar
I recommend go to the Mostar by train. You can visit the spa of the Buna river.
In the course of Mostar Old Bridge is a must.
You should try Herzegovina ham and some of the wines. Žilavka (white wine) and Blatina (red).
Visit the national park Sutjeska must be organized separately, and to leave the village on Mount Bjelasnica-Lukomir.

From Mostar have good connections by bus to Dubrovnik.

Dear Michael,
It is a pleasure to help a traveler so let me try.
As you already have suggestions for Sarajevo and Mostar Iwould like to propose Trebinje.
An Old town in Soutr Serbs Republic, just 20 km from Drubrovnik and it is on one of the regional roads from Mostar to Dubrovnik as well.
There you will find Tvrdos monastery (IX cent.), Herzegovina museum, old fortress on a bank of the beautifull Trebisnjica river. Many other monasteris, old sights etc.
My colleagues from Trebinje might be helpfull for your journey like visiting Perucica and Sutjeska national park, it is a local agency called Friend Travel > http://www.friendtravel.net > friendtravel@teol.net
About your question for Highland villages there are many interesting sights on the way from Pale *Jahorina to either Visegrad or Zvornik. A breathtaking pictoresque landscapes, valleys, an old houses all in Eastern part of Serbs Republic.
Also in North-east of Serbs Republic you could find a pearl of traditional Serbs ethno villages "Stanisici" near Bijeljina > http://www.etno-selo.com/
but I think it's out of your intended rout.

Have a nice trip to Bosnia!

sarajevo has a lot of interesting things to visit, i suggest you visit this page: http://www.sarajevo.ba/en/stream.php?kat=137 to see more information and make a decision on what you would like to see while there. also, the spring of the bosnia river is very interesting and especially in spring, so try to have a half-day visit there (you can picnic, ride a bike, walk... there are also many restaurants there and hotels nearby)

as for mostar, see this page: http://www.visitmostar.net/Placestosee.htm, but don't miss on the old bridge and have a walk on both sides of the river to see what a terrible thing the division of the city is.

as for the villages see the page: http://tourism.ba/eng/lukomir.wbsp and you can also contact these people (http://www.facebook.com/greenvisions?v=info) as they organise walking tours and stuff up there.

it depends how many days you have at your disposal, but there are many interesting places you can see from sarajevo to dubrovnik, but also northern from sarajevo.

what are your main interests? cultural heritage? religions of bosnia and their heritate? recent war history? you can contact me directly for more details...

feel free :)

Dear all, I have just returned from Bosnia and liked it a lot. Sarajevo has a really unique mixture of architectural styles, and a friendly athmosphere; Mostar and the Herzegowina area, where I visited Kravica, Medjurgorje, Pocitelj, Hutovo and Blagaj, I liked best. I surely will return as a visit to Kraljeva Sutjeska, Lukomir, Trebinje, Stolac, and Sutjeska National Park was not possible due to my limited time.

Thanks for all your information !, Michael
