As every country, it has it's fair share of petty crime, but the balkans are generally safe for a traveler, and urban areas are on the same or better level than western european cities.

Not only that Serbia is safer to travel than most of other european countries, but its also knows for its hospitality and various choises of cultural, artistic, historical and night-life happenings. Loads of fun. Maximum of safety. I had friends who came here from western Europe and stayed. And I also saw other countries to compare.

Traveling to Serbia is quite safe. So far, there hasn't been any cases of terrorist threats or attacks and all passengers can feel safe here. While Serbia has seen a fair share of problems during 1990s, situation has improved greatly and travelers can feel as safe as anywhere else in Europe. In fact, number of tourists visiting the country is growing every year and it clearly shows that safety is not an issue here.

So, if you plan to come and visit this country, you should take only the usual measures of caution: take care of your passport, money, leave valuables in hotel's safety box. Other than that, all you need to prepare for is for great excitement and wonderful time :)

The incidence of street crime is similar to that elsewhere in Europe, particularly in large urban centres. Pick-pocketing may occur on public transportation and in other public places. Foreigners may be targeted by thieves. Four-wheel-drive and luxury vehicles are targeted by car thieves more than other models. Exercise caution and ensure personal belongings, passports, and other travel documents are secure, particularly on public transportation and in large crowds or public markets. Do not show signs of affluence or carry large sums of money. For emergency assistance dial 92 for the police, 93 for the fire department and 94 for ambulance service.Demonstrations, public gatherings, and roadblocks should be avoided at all times since they may lead to sudden violent clashes, especially in the vicinity of official buildings and foreign Embassies.Carry a sufficient supply of medications, as shortages of prescription medicine are common outside major cities. Medical care is not up to Western standards. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services.Overall, exercise a high degree of caution in Serbia, especially in the border area with Kosovo. Although the security situation remains stable, there are still concerns that it could deteriorate, particularly in Kosovo and in border areas with Kosovo.Unexploded landmines may remain along the border with Kosovo.

Ofcourse, genaraly there is always a risk but in Serbia, the bigest risk is maybe bad condition of the rouds, some highways, and freeways but only some.Any way the best way is to use publick transport such as trains or buses.

Serbia is definitely really safe destination now. Specially bigger cities, Belgrade and Novi Sad. Public transport is not that great, but using taxi services with taxi meters is easy and cheap. A lot of good hotels and restorations, and really low price compared to other countries in region.

I am not from Serbia, but have been there several times. Actually we are neighbours.
Serbia is completely safe, but I am not so sure about Kosovo. But don't take my word for granted - pick pocketing is present everywhere.

I'm girl and every weekend I'm walking back ALONE after usual meeting with girls on Saturday night, to my house like half hour through dark shortcut streets, and for nine years I have only one 'drunk guy' incident and that is all.

Since Kosovo is no longer part of Serbia, it's a safe country where I've spent my youth so it comes from a personal experience. Furthermore,Serbian citizens are very warm and friendly, you'll be amazed by their hospitality.

It is a pity for these countries to keep a bad and difficult reputation due to the past political situation and influence of neighboring countries.
Poorer countries than Serbia are also safe to travel in as long as you keep a normal common sense of safety, and as stated many times above you will find a great warmth and sense of hospitality.
