Yeah, it is possible, I've carried a sofa in an express bus. Sometimes they charge extra but not much, private transport is much better and safer, also is not expensive.

Absolutely you can. The laws here are FLEXIBLE, almost anything can be done. The charge? it is always negotiable but it should not be much at all.

We routinely take our bicycles on the buses and the usual fare is the same for the bike as for the person. Ordinario buses (old school buses) are the most favourable fare. Generally 8-10 cordoba per 10 miles or .50¢ US/10mi

Yes, you can take almost anything on the bus. You will have to pay a little extra. Please be sure to negotiate the price.

Chickens, bicycles, etc., why not? Free or minor fee, we send our surfing "son" from Playa Roca Beach Hotel see:playaroca.com back and forth from northern and southern Nicaragua and never has said a "board" fee was demanded.

The expreso vans are like normal small vans so inside would be impossible, on the roof no problem, and on the bigger type school buses inside or outside isn't a problem, you do however normally have to pay a bit more but its pretty cheap anyway, hope this helps.

yes, you can take with you your surfboard, and it is not that expensive. Perhaps you will pay for it as if it was other passenger.

Here's an alternative - when we go from Managua up towards our place, we go to the Israel bus station, find the line of microbuses that are heading express to Chinandega, and rent one of them just for us and our stuff. We always pay $50, it's fast, roomy, air-conditioned, the driver will make a stop for some food/drink if you like, and he'll drive you to your destination if it's other than the bus station. There, you can take a cab to Jiquilillo or Asseradores or pick up a bus us north (cab rates are usually $15.) It's more than you'll pay for a regular school bus, but I guarantee you you'll be much, much more confortable and travel with your stuff inside.
Enjoy your trip!
