the ferry docks in wellington harbour...right in the middle of town. distance from Welly to Napier is about 330kms up the east coast, i enjoy this drive through some more untouched part of NZ. If i were you i would invest in a good map book and take the route less travelled, the roads are usually good even off the state highways and you find good wee beaches along the way. In a campervan there are loads of places to park up.

TQ Spring, for that has now given me a clear idea of my distance and time needed to bridge the route in reaching Napier.
I'm travelling with both GPS (TomTom 910 and a Garmin Nuvi650)units as I always do since 2007.

Yes, I'm arming my self with the camera at yr country's much appraised scenery and sights that I look forward to capture for the albums. Have just ordered a strong flashlight, the "X21 Led Lenser" for the caves in Waitomo. TQ again for the tip and advise, much appreciated.

Hi Gun, the ferry docks on the edge of the city, a 2-3km drive into the city centre. It is right by a motorway onramp for heading directly out of town if you want. Would suggest SH2 that takes you over the Rimutaka ranges to Masterton and on up to Napier.

Crossing the ferry from Picton, South Island, where exactly does the boat docked at in Wellington? Anyone knows precisely? ............The ferry docks in Wellington city very handy you can drive to Napier two ways you can go up through Levin, Woodville, Napier or you can go over the Rimutaka Ranges to Masterton, Woodville to Napier.......both ways take about 3 and a half hours to travel. Both ways have some good scenery so your choice.
