I actually live in Christchurch myself ,I suggest just popping onto the web and entering cheap or budget hotels auckland there are always deals & can quite often be cheaper on line. Hope that helps. Enjoy the footy !!

We also live in the South Island and do not have any recommendations of hostels - how about YHA. I would suggest that you check out Rough Guide. I found that when traveling in Switzerland last year that they were very good.

There are a few backpackers that you can try. Base is probably one of the most central and very clean.

I lived in Auckland for 7 months last year, I was in several places but definitely Base is the first option as it has a nice vibe, on the other hand its the largest hostel in Auckland. Everything depends on what you're looking for. They are linked to The Globe, a small disco just down on the groundfloor. For 26 Kiwi dollars you can stay in a shared room, the overall atmosphere is lots of fun. Easy to make friends.
