...safe is the country? We have travelled extensively as independent travellers but not to S. America. Is Caracas safe to visit. Is it ok to stay in budget accomodation. What is the best way to travel around and are domestic flights a reasonable price. If anyone has any advice on safety or the best way to get around or tips on hotels and best things to see and do any help would be greatly appreciated. In particular should Caracas be avoided? Thanks for your help

Dear traveler, sadly i have to admit that caracas is not longer a safe place to visit on your own, you have to be escort or guided by a native but the rest of the country is not so dangerous as the capital, like margarita island , los Roques, Gran sabana, Canaima, Cueva del Guacharo, domestic flights are reasonable prices, comfortable buses are available for very reasonables prices, tell me what do you want to do, how many days will you spend, and I will give you more information, with a combination of beach, mountain, rain forest, historic places, and Caracas.

Hi, Caracas is a beautiful city; but now is extremly insecure. If you want travel here go to east to the city. Altamira is a good zone. I recomend you to pay a little more for hotel but is more secure. is it is preferable that you make daily visits at night to go east zone mall, traveling by subway to get around but avoids the center and west of the city and can travel to beaches like Puerto La Cruz or Margarita Island you recommend much

though Caracas, as the others have said, is not that safe, i do also recommend not to miss the city since there are quite a few interesting things. I will also suggest to visit the city with a native, that believe me, some of us will be happy to do it.
the best of this country is outside caracas, places that other participants have named.
best for u!

Hi,
Caracas as all the cities of the world has good and bad, secure and insecure places. if you came the most important thing is knowing where to go, the best area to search for hotel is Altamira. But ten minutes from there is the Best Westen CCT in a big mall in Caracas, here the link: http://www.hotelcct.com.ve/sitev2/?locale=es usually has good prices. You might try selecting http://www.despegar.com/vuelos.html in your country to see deals on flights and hotels or if you live in Europe, edreams.com or rumbo.com have good prices on hotels and flights within Venezuela. While in Caracas is recommended, visit museums, take a taxi from the hotel and they will take you to the sites. could use the subway but this is a bit insecure if you really do not know where to go. Museo de Bellas Artes, Museo de Ciencias Naturales, Teatro Teresa Carreño, Parque del Este, Plaza Altamira, El Hatillo, are the tourist sites that you can go from day to observe different venues in the city. You can visit the Universidad Central de Venezuela UCV, considered patrimony of the world. and at night you can go to different nightclubss in Las Mercedes district or San Ignacio Mall.
The dangers of Caracas, are taking pictures if you go looking tourist, if you behave as a city dweller and do not go with your camera icing on the neck and the typical tourist garb, it is safe to pass unnoticed. dress code here is very prevalent Blue jean and flannel. Is the daily dress of the inhabitants of the city, unless you go to nightclubs and you can go a little more elegant.
with long-sleeved shirt and leather shoes. Everything depends of what disco will you go.
If you leave Caracas there are 5 places you should go.
Choroni, a small beach town in 4 hours by car from Caracas, where you'll find small inns where to stay.
Margarita Island, half an hour by plane from Maiquetia International Airport. Here you will find numerous beaches, hotels, nightclubs, restaurants and many activities, boat rides, visits to islands, diving, horseback riding and shopping.
Mérida, a small mountain city in the middle of the Andes, there you can visit various attractions like The Peak Bolivar at 5mil m high, or the eaves of Venezuela and the two Anti-renowned theme parks in the region. the city is known for its food and the friendliness of its inhabitants.
Los Roques, an archipelago of the most beautiful of the Caribbean, is 20min by plane from Caracas, and has small lodges where you can enjoy the Eco tourism.
and finally, Canaima, where you'll find the most spectacular natural beauty of South America. Angel Falls, Los Tepuys, Indian reservations and thousands of other things that go back thousands of years. It's like going into Jurassic Park without the dinosaurs. This place inspired the Disney movie UP.
Bye!!!

Dear friends,
You as independent travellers that had travelled extensively around the world, you canât avoid the main security tips using at any place and time. Do not made eyes contacts with estrangers, donât take any suspicious offer from any one, at least it is coming from an official and certified sourced. Split your money and donât show, count or develop how much cash you are carrying. Get as much information possible for your trip planning, travel light, Get Copy of you passport when traveling around on case you lost it. Get rooms at populated places where main services like police station, transportation, subway system and food are provided, get maps to orientate your self with the surrounded, since you get to the airport avoid sharing information concerning your trip, and get any additional information needed from the official representative. Well due my experience no matter where you are as far you minimize the risk by getting information of your planed trip, then your trip can be complete successfully.
Caracas is a beautiful city, Museums, residential areas, gastronomic, historical site, national park for mountain hiking and much more. You will enjoy it.
Venezuela it self is very expensive. And transportation is the first main inconvenient you might have.
Caracas is just a bit of what you can do in Venezuela,

Caracas is beautiful. As any other big city of the world, you should know what places to visit. There are nice hostels to stay at good prices. Bus travel is safe to all places in Venezuela. I recommend visit Margarita Island, Trujillo State, Falcon State.

All the people that write to you are right. Caracas is a hard city. If you come here please take a tour and stay in a safe zone as "Municipio CHACAO or BARUTA" There are good list of hotels as CCCT, PASEO LAS MERCEDES, INTERCONTINENTAL, BEST WSTERN, MARRIOT, Dont try to do Back Paking travel. Oe wear a ROLEX. IF you go to the island of Margarita take caution too, because even is very turisty there are dangerust places take a tour there and go to the main places. You have to know that in Venezuela we have a exchage control. If you use your Dollars to buy bolivars in a bank or in travel agency they will change one dollar for 2150 Bolivars. But if you change in black market you will get 6500 Bolivars and dont buy dollars back because They can be false. The black market is any person who is honest . Be carefull and dont change the money in the airports, Taxi drivers because they will give you less money. If you dont have any bolivars, change as little as you can. Normally here the peoples do not speak English, if they speak it is because they have travelled or studied and have a high cultural standard . In venezuela there is great mixture of races like that not sides pure races of whites, blacks or Indians. Anyone can be good or a villain that the color is not indicative of honesty.

hello!! Saddly, our city Caracas is a very dangerous place to visit, more if you like to stay at budget accomodations. In order for you to minimize the risk of beign mugged or robbed you should take taxis of known companies (from and to the airport) and preferably have it booked in advance with a travel agency. Do not walk alone showing the world you are a tourist. If you must walk, do not take valuables with you nor your passport. Leave it at your hotel and carry a small amount of local currency like 200 bsf. Do not carry bags with you either. You have to look like any other local. Book any tours with a travel agency and do not walk at night anywhere. If yoy follow these simple rules you will reduce the risk of being mugged substantially. Hope you like Venezuela.

Hi Thanks for this really useful info. I think given the responses we might just get straight out of Caracas and see the rest of the country. Any suggestions on the best (and safest!) places to go
Thanks

it's a very beautiful country but i hate to say it not very safe at all. my best opinion is know where it is your going ahead of time. book ahead of time with reputable agents and services that meet you upon arrival. maqueti airport is the usual point to connect to national flights. pay a baggage handler to escort you to the national term. avoid taxis. margarita island is your best bet for safe fun in the sun. reputable people will meet you at the airport and guide you thru. good luck

Hello, Do not avoid Caracas. Venezuela is more violent than Mexico. Try never to get in any kind of trouble what so ever. Here if they do not rob you then a policeman may arrest you. In this sense try not to be on the street so much. Be inside malls, pubs, restaurants, etc. Use the subways or taxi cabs. As reference a Big Mac with Coca Cola and French Fries is about US$15,oo. Good Luck. Omar.

Danger is all over the world! There's no need to be afraid, just cautious. Keep away from places you see has few people, or if anyone advise you not to go to certain places, just avoid them. At night you really have to be cautious walking around. It's not recommended to walk around at late hours.
Depending on how long you'll be here in Venezuela. If the time is short, don't stay too long in Caracas; just take a night bus and either go down to the south to see the Grand Sabana, Roraima and/or angell fall (the highest waterfall of the world); or to the northwest to Chichirive and Choroni, or just come across here to Isla Margarita. Because there's so many places to visit. What ever you decide to do, you can contact me through email, so I can advise you about the different places to visit.
