Hi there,
Well, it depends on many things, for example time constraints, do you have hours or days? How old are you, where are you from, what are your interests - museums or exhibitions, monuments, buildings, nature, people, clubs... You mentioned "cool" places... So here is my opinion:
I would recommend the house of terror, thats a cool place. :) It shows a bit about Hungary's history and the change of regims during the 20th century. Then you could take a walk on the road where it can be found, namely Andrassy road until you hit the huge square called Heroes square. There are a number of things to do and see there - yes, (statues of) heroes for instance, 2 great museums with exhibitions on the two sides, the Vajdahunyad castle, The Szechenyi Spa, the zoo, the funfair and the city park. If you have more time go up and have a walk in the castle district (where our royal castle is located) on the Buda side. You can use the funicular for the way up. One of the best views to Pest is from there (from the Fisherman's bastion). If you want to see something "cool" there - check out the budavari labirynth... its fun, you'll see why. :)
And try a spa... if you like hot thermal baths. Some dont, so its up to you. I like Szechenyi but Rudas and Gellert is good too...
Thats it for now... enjoy your stay in Budapest and have fun!!!

As all of the above are correct I would suggest to you that you add three more:
a. Visit Margaret Island (Nos 4 or Nos 6 tram),
b. Visit the Opera House (going by the Yellow Metro) and afterwards walking up Andrassi Utca to Hero's Square.
c. Visit the Cittadela at sunset or night time. This is the best view for visitors better than the Fisherman Wharf view from the Castle.

You can go to the riverside at dusk, drink something, than walk up to the Castle. There are some good restaurants there. At daytime you can visit Margareth island, Heroe's square and Váci street.

Hi!
There is a lot to do and see here. If you like you can visit several of the thermal spa's. A must is the castle district, heroes square, the Jewish quarter. For fun and food visit the pedestrian streets Ráday street, or List Ferenc square.
Party and music a place called Zöld Pardon, or the A32 boat.
And to top it all off take a night sight cruse on the Dabube.
If you need anything specific, please contact me or anyone else:)
Enjoy
