Masaya market is, without doubts, THE place in Nicaragua to buy very good and original souvenirs to take home. You probably can find all different local handicrafts made in the different corners of Nicaragua. Ranging from wooden rocking chairs to the famous hanging mats till jewelry and ornaments. Take your camera as the place provides for great spectacular and colorful pictures. Don't bother about the many women selling their goods asking you: what are you looking for dear? They just are making themselves a living! Before buying ask in different places and compare prices. Also bargaining is not badly seen here, although do not exaggerate.
Also remember that most articles can be bought as well in local workshops (and cheaper) in the areas where they are produced. Always have a look for them and ask for it while traveling through Nicaragua. Buying in local workshops has the additional benefit that they will show you how they make their products, which make it so much more interesting when taking it home.
The crafts market in Masaya is a nice place to get your Nicaraguan souvenirs. A friendly setting and lots of small stands with souvenirs that are not very different but that do offer enough variety to find something for everybody back home.
