Kawasaki Daishi is one of the most popular temples and shrines that Japanese people visit for Hatsumode on New Year's Eve and during New Year. The are many hawker shops selling everything from steamed potatoes with butter to as of recent, Donar kababs. There are shops on the temple grounds as well as on all the surrounding streets nearby. It is also famous for their "Ton-ton Okashi" that is made by cutting long strips of candy into bite sized pieces with a knife in rhythm. The taste is not that special but the method that it is produced is a novelty and fun to watch for a bit.
