Loch Ard Gorge takes its name from the ship that was wrecked on nearby Muttonbird Island in 1878. The Gorge is part of Port Campbell National Park, about 10 minutes drive west of The Twelve Apostles. There's not such a lot to see here but a climb down the (many) stairs to the small sandy beach and a walk in the shallow cave where the two survivors sheltered can be a sort of moving experience. It's easy to imagine, as you listen to the booming surf and look up at the towering cliffs overhead, just what bravery it took to survive and climb out of here. There are plaques in place that tell the story. A little bit of sad history that's well remembered in this part of the world.
