Pothgul Vehera in Polonnaruwa, was one of the most ancient repositeries for Books (written on Ola Leaves) on Buddhism. That they were venerated is understood, because the books themselves were to do with Buddhism. The building itself shows that there was once a domed roof earlier.

Potgul Vehera gives a meaning of a Library in a monastery or temple. Though the name suggest library there are no windows in this building. It would have been used to store books of Buddhism. The whole complex has been built in four terraces on a square ground. The main building is at the center and on the top most terrace. The dome shaped roof of this circular building has collapsed. The plaster on the wall with painting are clearly visible even today.
