The Serenity, the quiet and calm, the peaceful atmosphere for meditation the histiry surrounding the place are all parts of things that make this place of worship a top attractions. Also remember to see the worls renowned paintings. one word of advise... avoid POYA DAYS ... because its unbeleivably crowded and noisy on the poya days.

This is a sacred Buddhist Temple of much importance to the Buddhist as it was visited by The Buddha on his third visit to this beautiful island and also as the Chair on which The Buddha sat and preached his teaching is said to be enshined in the Chaityaa - Stupa (Pagoda).

The Kelaniya temple is a famous temple said to enshrine a 'Jewelled Throne' that was fought over by two 'naga' kings. Visiting Sri Lanka on this occasion Lord Buddha solved the dispute and the chair was enshrined and Kelaniya temple was built by the kings to respect Lord Buddha. There is a local saying that translates to 'If you worship at Kelaniya temple once, all sins will be washed away'. This saying shows how important the temple is for locals. The temple can be very crowded on Buddhist holidays but otherwise is a very calm and quite place to visit.

Kelaniya Temple is situated just outside of the Colombo City. It is a tranquil place to visit and venerated by Buddhists due to the fact that the Lord Buddha has visited this same spot in the past. Partly torn down by the Portugese, it still retains some of the original paintings as well as the paintings by the artist called Solis Mendis.
