Ile Ife is universally believed to be theorghin of the Yourbas which is also believed to the be Origin of the human world of creation. However, the historical artifacts such as Ife bronze work, Olokun head telling about early Yoruba civilizations are mouth watering.

The National Museum Lagos is now over fifty years old, having been established just before Nigeria achieved full independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. It has one of the most significant collections of West African antiquities in the world. Lord Cultural Resources was asked by the Ford Foundation to facilitate a retreat for the National Museum to identify the vision for a revitalized museum in terms of its role and impact in Nigeria, West Africa and the world at large. The visioning retreat resulted in a number of immediate changes to the programming of the Museum well received by visitors and a renewed sense of purpose among staff.

The National Museum is popular because of its collections of rare Nigerian arts and carvings. Some of these carvings date back to the pre-historic period and have been often researched as a part of African studies. The museum’s most prized possessions are the terra-cotta and bronze creations and ivory-bronze sculptures. Many of the artifacts here were produced during the reign of the Benin kings. The museum arranges special trips to artistic exhibits like the ‘Treasures of Ancient Nigeria’ and the ‘Legacy of Two Thousand Years.'
Location: the museum is easy-to-find being a landmark in Lagos. It is located in the central part of the city, near the Lagos Island, at Awolowo Road.

Situated in the heart of Lagos Island, between the commercial Broad Street and elite Ikoyi areas, the National Museum in Lagos is indeed an interesting place to visit. The very Mercedes Benz Vehicle in which the only assasinated Military President in the country's history was killed is yet preserved here.

The National Musuem, Lagos has a storage of legacyies dating back to 2,000years, tracing the region's artistic traditions. The Government of Yesterday and Today gallery displays information about Nigeria's post-colonial generals, presidents and military rulers. One of the more interesting exhibits is the bullet-ridden black Mercedes of former President Murtala Mohammed, in which he was assassinated in 1973.

It can be an education to visit this museum, but one should not go with very high expectations. Having visited it myself at least three times, the staff are not very warm unless one seems foreign or is accompanied by foreigners. It is very cheap to get in (N100 or about 0.70USD), but once in one is struck by the obvious lack of care given to the artifacts. Also, the guides don't always seem very knowledgeable, and they can sometimes rush one through the experience. There is also no provision made for the purchase of souvenirs by the museum authorities, although there is a very nice art shop within the premises where one can buy inexpensive carvings and paintings. It is a worthwhile experience however, as long as one doesn't expect too much.
