Otavalo is a nice open air market, typical to a certain extent, you may find similar market places all over the andean countries (meaning the countries that have larger amerindian population: Ecuador, Perú and Bolivia.) The three countries where before part of the Inca Empire, and during the viceroyal era they were as well parts of the Viceroyalty of Perú. The most important cities of the Inca Empire or of the Peruvian Viceroyalty were of courise in the territories that still are called "Perú" and the best crafts are to be found on its markets. I will favour those in Lima actually as they have all the crafts possible from all over Perú (rainforest tribes, andean quechuas and aymara crafts, coast valley´s curiosities, etc)

Ecuador is one of my five favorite countries and Otavalo the most favored town there (my favorite lodging in Otavalo is the AliShungu Mountain Lodge! You'll agree once you got to know it). The surroundings are paradisaical, the people are somewhat unscathed by colonialism, and the famous Saturday market is a jewel. You can get a so-called Panama hat (in fact made from Ecuadorian reeds for the Ecuadorian builders of the Panama canal) for a mere 7-8 bucks (cheap version), as well as an authentic antique woven poncho for nearly 10.000 bucks

Otavalo is considered the biggest market of artesanies in the whole american continent. Here you will find greatest varieties of artesanies, all hand maded, from t-shirts to ceramic vessels and paintings. Every product is of great quality and not expensive at all. Otavalo city is at 2 hours by bus from Quito, many buses depart in the day from the Terminal Terrestre de Quito and you can also get your bus in the Panamericana road where they stop to take passengers. Don't forget to visit the Cascada Peguche, you will love it!

Otavalo can be considered an international destination. Tourists from all over the world are driven to this famous indigenous market since many decades. Visitors find a friendly town, where the locals showcase their traditional attire in a busy and vibrant market. It is a recognized destination to shop, the activity which has rendered the Otavalenos as the most prosperous indigenous group in Ecuador. Although the town is a most cliche destination than anywhere else, there are various ways to look beyond the surface, as conversing with vendors, or visiting the communities around Otavalo, where the crafts and cloths are manufactured.

Otavalo, is a very nice place to visit and o stay for a few days, you can stay in Otavalo a week and visit a diferents touristics places and you can go to the indigenas comunities whith a lower butjet for transport and food.

Otavalo is a city whose peoplo keep their culture, you will see how they dress their typical clothes, and lifestyle. Otavalo also is good for buying suveniers and this city is sorrounded by very beautiful views and lakes.
