The Haus des Meeres is located in the site of a Flak Tower built of heavily reinforced concrete, to obviously last for 1000 years. The city authorities tried to dynamite the structure years before and only succeeded in breaking countless windows in the surrounding neighborhood! It is actually quite an amazing use of what was strictly a military defense structure. It is a zoo and an acquarium on a number of floors in the middle of a very popular shopping district. There is a tropical motif throughout & there are birds flying around, a few chimpanzees, and a number of boa constrictors to be seen. Make sure you check your coats on the ground floor!

The "house of the sea" is located very close to the mariahilfer straße, a very busy shopping street in the heart of vienna. The tower was built in the second world war for Anti Air cannons is due to its location and massiveness hard to destruct. The massive tower contains several aquariums and terrariums making it easy to explore a more "exotic" fauna and flora then you can find in austria itself. The house of the sea is an ideal location to spend rainy days and still explore some of the nicest sites in vienna.
