The sacred temple of tooth holding the Relic of Lord Buddha is the key attraction and the most holiest temple for Buddhists in the country. It goes back to the 18th century with evidence available at the Kandy museum and a fine place to those who are interested in archeology with all ancient artifacts available for exhibition. One of the most serene places in the island and a fine architecture for those who are interested in looking at the ancient architecture with many artifacts in rock and wood work. Also the Kandy procession which is held during June and August of every year is the leading pageant of the island , which is held in respect of the relic at the temple.
A special note: There are many temples and sthupa's in and around Kandy, few prominent churches and Hindu kovils. I need time to collect details of all those important sites and publish it here. Therefore it will appear in a later display .

Kandy (Ancient Senkadagala) is the last capital of the Sinhala Monarchy the History of which goes back to at least five centuries before the beginning of the Common Era. The city is surrounded by a ring of mountain ranges and Sri Lanka’s largest river Mahaweli Ganga.Kandy enjoys a salubrious climate and still breathes the ancient lifestyle of the people. The heritage of Kandy, Architecture, Sculpture, painting, Dance and Music, all such cultural traditions are endemic to Sri Lanka.Kandy remains the home for all denominations of major world religions.

Located in Kandy, an ancient religious center for Buddhism, the octagonal, golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth, built between 1687 and 1707, is a stunning sacred temple, which is believed to house the left upper canine of the Lord Buddha himself. According to legend, the tooth was taken from the Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre and smuggled to Sri Lanka hidden in Princess Hemamali's hair, where it survived numerous attempts to capture and destroy it. Today, this famous religious relic attracts white-clad pilgrims, bearing lotus blossoms and frangipani, every day. The temple is joined to the Pattiripuwa (Octagon), built in 1803, which was originally used as a prison, but now houses a collection of palm-leaf manuscripts. There are many other attractions in this ancient city, including Natha Devale, a stone sanctuary and the oldest building in Kandy, and Mahavishnu Devale, a temple which is dedicated to Vishnu, the protector of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

This is the main attraction of tourists in Sri Lanka. This is the place where the lord Buddha's tooth relic is kept. Many tourists visit here to see the Esala Perahara which is held in the month of August. The perahara is the exhibition of the tooth relic of Lord Buddha and is paraded in streets with Kandyan Dancers and elephants dressed beautifully. You can visit the website for more information on the temple of the toothrelic. The website is www.sridaladamaligawa.com

Royal City of Kandy
Nestled in lush green hills and built around a scenic lake, the Royal City of Kandy, at 500m above sea level, is the hub of any visit to the hill country. Kandy (Colombo 116km) a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the last bastion of resistance to colonial rule. Even today, Kandyans pride themselves on their distinctive architecture, music, dance and art. The showpiece of the city is the Dalada Maligawa or Temple of the Tooth, which hosts the Buddha’s tooth relic, an item of veneration to all Buddhists. Each year, in July or August, the city holds the Esala Perahera, a spectacular procession and display of medieval pageantry - replete with caparisoned elephants, whirling fire-dancers and pulsating drummers - the main purpose of which is to parade the tooth relic. Strolling around the lake or exploring the numerous temples that dot the hills nearby is an ideal way to experience the atmosphere of this historic city.
