The reserve covers an area at just over 11,000 hectares and is home to a great bio diversity of birds, insects, reptiles and mammals. While many of the rainforest inhabitants are fairly common, there are a high number of elusive creatures that live deep in the vegetation. Below is a breakdown of the wide variety of species found here

he hilly virgin rainforest, part of the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests ecoregion, was saved from the worst of commercial logging by its inaccessibility, and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and a World Heritage Site in 1988. The reserve's name translates as Kingdom of the Lion.

The only virgin rain forest in Sri Lanka. This 11,000+ hectare land is full of natures wonders. Endemic trees, amphibians & birds; water falls; mammals; reptiles; four layer canopies & of course plenty of rains. More than 90% of the endemic birds of Sri Lanka can be seen.........

Sinharaja is situated in the south-west lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka and falls into the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces. Sinharaja is also a Man and Biosphere Forest Reserve, and a large proportion of the flora in this forest is endemic to the country. Some species are endemic to the Sinharaja Forest itself. Sinharaja also has many species of endemic fauna. Most important of all is its the only Nature reserve to be a World Heritage site in the Island.
