When you arrive in Belgrade, every guide book will suggest you to visit Kalemegdan and Belgrade Fortress and if you ask any local at the street, they will give you a direction to KALEMEGDAN. So, we have a strange word and a Fortress and it can be quite confusing, right? So, let's make it clear. You have two areas. First is Kalemegdan and you are right, the word is strange because it is of Turkish origin and consists of two words actually: The first is KALE, which means field and the second is MEGDAN, which is battle....so, once you crosee the first street from Knez Mihajlova Street you are stepping at old battlefield or the last line of defense. As of late 1920s and 1930s, the whole area is turned into a park. Now, where is that Fortress? Well, the best way to reach it is if you are arriving from direction of Museum od Pedagogy, use the wide road and just be brave. You are still at the battlefield, but within minutes you will see the first gate: Outer Stambol (Istanbul) Gate and not far from there, you will see Inner Stambol Gate and yes, the name of the gates have something to do with the city of Istanbul in Turkey. If you turn around, you are in the direction of Istanbul and on the ancient road that connected two cities, but we'll skip this trip. Go through Inner Stambol Gate and you will see remnants of the old fortress. In order to learn better about this, the best way is to hire professional guide to help you learn more about this place and its amazing history.

Kalemegdan (Serbian Cyrillic: Калемегдан) is a fortress and park in an urban area neighborhood of Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It is located in Belgrade's municipality of Stari Grad. Kalemegdan was declared Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and it is protected by Republic of Serbia. Kalemeydan means "Hill of battle" in Turkish.

The fortress Kalemegdan has a very long history, going back at least to the castrum of Roman times; destroyed several times by successive waves of invaders, was rebuilt as a castle by the Byzantines in the 12th century. Under the Serb Despot Stefan Lazarevic , son of the king Lazar , Belgrade became the capital of the Serbian kingdom; the fortress was strengthened, and the Despot's palace was built within the old castle. A medieval town grew up within the walls of the lower fort (a model is on display on one of the upper terraces).
In Kalemegdan park You can also visit :
- Vojni muzej , the Military Museum (open 10-17), with an open air section showing the tanks and cannons of the two world wars ;
- Prirodnjacki muzej , the Natural History Museum Gallery , a small but well organized changing display of the local fauna and paleontology ;
- Cvijeta Zuzoric Pavillion, a large gallery space used for temporary exhibitions;
-ZOO - Near the fortress, and even visible from above from the upper fort, is the Zooloski Vrt , the Zoo , well kept and entertaining; the entrance is however from the Tadeusa Koscuska street. Beyond the fortress, below the ramparts overlooking the confluence of the rivers, is Donji grad , now a park, with several remains of the Turkish times, such as the Amam , now transformed into a planetarium, and the hexagonal tower of Nebojsa kula , a Turkish prison with a grim history of capital executions.
I hope You like it, It's really amazing.Have a nice time here....
