The square jamaa elfna ,the heart beating of Marrakech,is a wonderful place in the medina of marrakech.Everyevening there are marrakchis and tourists coming to watch shows and exhibitions of storytellers,snake-charmers,acrobats,palm-readers,water-sellers,eat in the public restaurents, drink a sweet orange juice,Hena-tatoos... The first thing we visit in marrakech is this magical square;a place of food; entertainment and cultures. Classified by UNISCO !

The square is fun any time of the day. Anyone coming to Marrakech should see the square at different time of the day. In the mornings it is practically deserted, empt and there is hardly anyone around. It is just one big square. In the afternoon it starts to get busy, the vendors of oranges open and there are many other attractions for tourists around such as the snake charmers, the monkey pictures (please be careful the monkeys are trained to take your wallets) and other. At night it is the busiest with the food stalls, and henna women, the story tellers and my favourite is the dentist that will put your teeth out right there at the square. Enjoy it any time of the day!

The potato-egg cart is very small, sandwiched between Moroccan cuisine styled restaurants, catering mostly to touists. And this is what they serve: sandwiches! It is a simple egg potato sandwich mixed with onions, along with a little olive oil squeezed into into the loaf of bread. Here you can meet Hassan who also works selling snails, munching down on a sandwich and talking about life as it is in his country. "I cannot find a girl to marry," he says. "Why?" I ask. "Because all the girls want large dowries," he says, shaking his head. "So they are trying to find foreigners to marry." Hassan glances at a couple young blondes from Britain, next table over. There, a Moroccan man is taking their photos of another young Moroccan man tipping a plate full of chicken, tipping it as if it were about to slide into her cleavage.. "Haram!" he says. Harram is the word for those things forbidden. In Jmaa el Fna, everything seems out of kilter. To our left, the belly dancers are men cross dressing, even as a foreigner, not realizing this fact (or probably not aware of it) is spinning one of them around! Meanwhile, several girls who are covered with hajebs, sit down nearby, smiling at the spectacle while ordering their sandwiches - "Just a little potato and extra eggs!" The sandwich is worth it for about a euro and the definitely worth seeing the tourists...through the eyes of the locals!

The place remains the main square of Marrakesh, used equally by locals and tourists. During the day it is predominantly occupied by orange juice stalls, youths with chained Barbary apes, water sellers in colourful costumes with traditional leather water-bags and brass cups, and snake charmers who will pose for photographs for tourists[2]. As the day progresses the entertainments on offer change: the snake charmers depart, and in the afternoon and evening the square becomes more crowded, with Chleuh dancing-boys (it would be against custom for girls to provide such an entertainment), story-tellers (telling their tales in Berber or Arabic, to an audience of appreciative locals), magicians, and peddlers of traditional medicines. As dark descends the square fills with dozens of food-stalls, and the crowds are at their height.

A popular sight in Marrakech. Has to be seen-but maybe once is enough. Having known the place since the 1960's, it is sad to notice that it has become a mere attraction for cheesy tourism. The Square has, since the mid-eighties, lost its cultural side(book sellers, true story tellers, stand-up comic shows, authentic folk music). Due to the misleading info found in guidebooks and travel brochures, the Square became a "market" for junk souvenirs and trinkets, a forum for professional beggars and tourists' scams. Its essential beauty and socio-cultural interest are reduced to a mere exotic digital camera shot. Two important DO NOTS: 1- Do not miss the drag-queens show starting from 6pm and on near Café Argana 2- Do not drink orange juice from those stalls as the oranges remain exposed to the sun for hours if not days before they're squeezed.

jemaa el fnaa square is an immense esplanade further along to the left , in close proximity to the koutoubia mosque , which is at once both a concourse and market . classified as an humanity world oral heritage site, the jemaa el fna square ,which was once a site of public execution , is the beating heart of the medina .all day long till late into the evening , a colorful world of ancient traditions invites you to dream and escape ,in this huge open-air theatre, futuretellers ,snake charmers, storytellers, and monkey handlers perform, making it a magical place .at dusk cheap food stalls ,lit by the flickering acetylene lamps, take over the square ,and the smell of their tasty dishes permeates the air .i invite evry one to come and live this magical experience in marrakech
