It's one of the typical places that no visitor should leave out of their schedule. Here you can have some of the best meals and wines with "candombe" music in the background. Then you can take a walk along peatonal Sarandí and buy sourvenirs (that can go from actual mementos to clothes and antiques) to end in Puerta de la Ciudadela to have a nice view of the beggining of our main avenue. And the good thing about this city being small is that you can do all this walking no more than 15 blocks =)

You all be delighted with excellent meats and poultry that we have. Couple of Days Ago we beat Argentina in a hundred year monopoly of meat market and now Uruguay is Ranked # 1st in Top-Notch Premium Beef.
All you have to do is come around and let your senses discover the pleasure of fine Dinning Uruguayan Way!

The typical Uruguayan food and the one we are famous worldwide is our "asado" (fire cooked meat). In Uruguay, our cows are breed in the countryside, having almost 100% grass as their main food for growing. This fact makes our meat special, natural and tender. Preparing these dishes based on meat and other parts of the cows such as kidneys, it isn't just a cooking method but also a cultural experience. Friends and family gathered around the fireplace or barbecue outdoors (fire started from a pile of wood), waiting for these dishes to be ready. “Mercado del Puerto” (14 different restaurants inside for you to choose) is the place where all these delicious meat based dishes can be tasted, prepared in this unique Uruguayan way (there are also other options as fish and vegetables for people that do not like meat or vegetarians). – Roldos is the one I like best, also offering their well known drink Medio y Medio. “Mercado del Puerto” was built in 1868 as the main marketplace of the city (3500 m2) and in you can see the clock installed in 1897 still working; therefore it was declared by the government as "National Historical Monument" in 1975. It is surrounded by “Ciudad Vieja”, historical place in Montevideo because it’s the old city where immigrants lived long time ago, where they fight against invasion and declare independence too. There are a lot of typical crafts’ shops to visit around - outside Mercado painters draw typical Uruguayan scenarios as candombe - and in the weekends there is also a crafts and antiques’ fair nearby in the pedestrian road.

This place is a must when visiting Montevideo. It is located near the port of Montevideo in the old town in a pedestrian street. It is a 3500 square meters building from the year 1825. There you can eat the best meat in Uruguay, which is really great!! You can also have any other dish of international cuisine. Several restaurants serve food and drinks inside it. I particularly like Roldos. They serve all kinds of drinks but the one you should try is Medio y Medio de Roldos, which is the typical one. it is open 7 days a week and you can go there for lunch or dinner. If you like meat I recommend you try a Parrilada where you can try a little bit of everything. The provolne cheese is also great as an appetizer. There you will see musicians playing typical songs. On the pedestrian street you have several painters who paint typical sceneries of the candome (drums music) and artisans who sell ther hand made things such as mates.
