Nuwara Eliya or sometimes called Little England was favored by the English for the similar weather . Rainy and Cold. Up in the mountains and surrounded by Tea Plantations. The Golf Course, the Post Office building, Lovers Leap Water Falls and the Hakgala Botanical Gardens are worth a visit from here.

Nuwara Eliya, the city of Lights, or as some call it, "Little England" is the hill station of the British Colonial times. The Golf course here is the oldest in Asia. Pidurutalagala the highest mountain can be seen from here.

Blessed a with salubrious climate, breathtaking views of valleys, meadows, mountains and greenery; it's hard to imagine that Nuwara Eliya is only 180 Km from the hot and humid Colombo.
Nuwara Eliya (City of Lights), also known as 'Little' England', was the favourite hill station of the British who tried to create Nuwara Eliya into a typical English Village. The old brick Post office, country house like hill club, with it's hunting pictures, mounted hunting trophies and fish, and it's strict formal dinner attire; the 18 hole golf course, race course etc., all remind you of 'England'.

Situated at around 2000m above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations Nuwara Eliya is the main hill resort of Sri Lanka and the heart of the tea industry. Once a pleasure retreat of the European planters the town is still very much an English town with many English style bungalows and buildings. Nuwara Eliya is a good escape for those who miss cool breeze in tropical Sri Lanka at any time of the year. Local tourists flock to this town in their 'season' from March to May when it is the hottest duration for the town, April being the busiest.
Nuwara Eliya offers many activities for tourists including visits to tea plantations golfing, horse riding, boating, hiking and of course exploring the beauty of the landscaped gardens, waterfalls and plateaus.
Sri Lanka is one of the world's largest exporters of tea. Since the introduction of tea to Sri Lanka in mid 19the century Nuwara Eliya has been the capital of the tea industry. For many miles prior to reaching Nuwara Eliya from either direction you will find acres and acres of tea plantations, infact nothing but tea estates. There are many factories open for visitor's which also have tea sales outlets.
There are many popular water falls around the town. Many could be visited as a part of trekking and/or hiking expeditions.
Ramboda Falls - 329 ft. is also an attraction in this area
Devon Falls drops 97 metres and is named after Devon, a pioneer coffee planter. It is 6 Km west of Thalawakelle and there is a special parking and view
Laksapana Falls - off the Nuwara Eliya - Kandapola Road. The Nuwara Eliya beer is brewed from the water of the stream.

Nuwaraeliya is about77km from Kandy city. Modes of transport are train, coach, car or van. The road for motor traffic is beautifully scenic with many small water falls flowing by the side of the road. If you travel by train the scenery is extremely beautiful specially during rainy season. The city itself is pretty cold. In the event winds blow the temperature drops down rapidly with mist covering the entire city. The highest mountain in the island"Pidurutalagala" is located from one side where the village in the highest elevation called "Kukulegama" is also located in close proximity to town. During the summer season March-April the city is transformed to a festive mood with various sporting items such as horse racing, motor racing , trekking etc. Though expensive lodging is quite comfortable and plenty of places to lodge. Food is fairly cheap and plenty of places. Nice esplanade to relax the whole day with flowers blooming during the festive season. Rest of the season is rainy and cold with lots of mist.

Nuwara Eliya meaning "city of light", is a town in the highlands of Sri Lanka.Climate is really cool due to the located altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft).
Area is famous for world's best tea production. Famous brands such as Dhilma, Lipton, Mackwoods,Mlesna
This picture shows how a tea plucker collects tea buds. later these buds in kg's measured and labor is paid according to the weight.
This city was founded by Samuel Baker, same guy who discovered Lake Albert and the explorer of the Nile in 1846. town is nick named Little England as it was truly the play ground of many colonial Englishmen.
There are still remains of British influence largely visible, like Post office- train stations- horse racing- golf- beer!
High season in April. very expensive ! Local new year and limited hotels.
very romantic. many locals go for honeymoon.

Nuwara Eliya is a mountain station at 1,868 m (6,128 ft) of altitude, in a splendid landscape. The city pretends to be particularly well-kept and neat, and the always green grass gives to the locality an aspect of “colonial British style".
Nuwara Eliya was built entirely during the 19th century and its architecture mimics that of an English country town, with red-brick walls, country house like hill club and mock-Tudor half-timbering.
Blessed with salubrious climate, breathtaking views of valleys, meadows, mountains and greenery; it's hard to imagine that Nuwara Eliya is only 180 Km from the hot and humid Colombo. Temperatures are 14C-21C (Jan- April) 16C-18C (May-Aug) 15C- 18C (Sept-Dec).

Nuwara Eliya
At the heart of the southern hill country is Nuwara Eliya (Colombo 180km), Sri Lanka’s highest town and a favourite hill station during British colonial times. The town is still touted as ‘Little England’, an illusion maintained by the presence of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, a racecourse, the Victoria Park and excellent trout fishing in nearby lakes and rivers. You will find the temperature can drop close to freezing at nights and log fires are a common feature of the many Tudor-style houses. Adding to the atmosphere is the spectacle of its townsfolk wrapped up in winter jackets and woolly hats, carting great bundles of turnips, leeks, marrows and cabbages to the markets. Nuwara Eliya is a great base to explore the surrounding countryside: there are many walks on offer, including hiking around the lower slopes of the thickly-forested Mount Pidurutalagala, at 2,555m the island’s highest peak. A visit to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, a short distance from Nuwara Eliya, is also recommended.
Among the most iconic vistas of the hill country are the rolling tea estates with their vast swathes of terrain carpeted in an emerald sea. Women draped in colourful saris resemble butterflies as they work their way along the tea bushes, deftly picking just two leaves and a bud from each branch and tossing them into baskets slung on their backs. Introduced to the island in the late 19th century by the British, tea remains of vital importance to the economy. Some of the finest teas in the world are produced in the hill country. Visit a tea factory and see how the plucked tea is dried, crushed, fermented and fired using machinery that remains largely unchanged since Victorian times.
