Skadarlija began to acquire its bohemian character in the last few decades of the 19th century, and particularly after 1901,when the well-known Dardaneli inn was demolished and its guests, prominent writers and actors, moved to the Skadarlija inns or kafanas. The best-known of these were Tri šešira ("Three Hats"), Dva jelena ("Two Deer"), Zlatni bokal ("The Golden Chalice"), Bandist, East, Guild, Vuk Karadžić and The two Sergeants. The first three of these still survive today, accompanied by some new restaurants like Ima dana ("There will be days"), Skadarlija (demolished in 2006), Dva bela goluba ("Two White Doves").

Skadarlija is a winding old street covered with cobblestone, in the heart of Belgrade, on the confluence of two rivers, the Sava and the Danube.
There are many inns and restaurants in which you are always welcome, no matter where you come from. Sesir moj, Dva jelena, Ima dana, Dva bela goluba, Zlatan Bokal, Crni Gruja, Tri sesira, Velika Skadarlija.
The first inn was opened there in 1876, and since then Skadarlija has been waiting you with heart, smiles, great dishes, plum brandy and wine, and with beautiful songs. Some of the specialties of Serbian national cuisine from Skadarlija are offered here for you to taste.
Skadarlija is also the sacred guardian of the Belgrade spirit’s secret. For decades, it has been a gathering place for artists – poets, writers, painters, actors and musicians, but also of numerous craftsmen, civil servants, politicians and statesmen of all over the world. The well known writer Alberto Moravia said: “Your Skadarlija is a magic place of the cultural history of Belgrade where art can always be sensed and loved.”

(Skadarska street). Pedestrian street filled with restaurants and cafes, most in the spirit of old Belgrade. Live bands playing old Belgrade music could be heared here in the evenings. The present Skadarlija, a short and curved street, is a remarkable Belgrade tourist aattraction. It includes well-known restaurants, hotels, art galleries, antique and souvenir shops, and the Sebilj fountain.

Skadarlija Street is the Belgrade's equivalent of Paris' famous Bohemian Montmarte spot, one of the most popular haunts of tourists in the city. Lined with restaurants and pubs, their tables and festivity spilling onto the pavements, it is a colorful spot to soak up the traditional Serbian scene, with strolling gypsy musicians mingling with artists and local revellers. It is the venue to sample the local specialities, washed down with beer and good conversation, perhaps pick up some souvenirs, art and antiques and promenade along the cobbled pedestrianised precinct.

At the the very center of the city, you should plan your dinner in the bohemic quarter - Skadarlija Street. Skadarlija is also known for its excellent restaurants, offering national food, and live acoustic music called "starogradska muzika" (can be translated as "old city music") and the bohemic spirit, remained from numerous writers and artists, back in the 19th century, who made this street famous.
