The second Capital of the country. It is known as the Medival Capital and dates from 1017 to 1235 AD. Located in the North Central Province and is 215 Km's fro Colombo the Commercial Capital.
Polonnaruwa has Buddhist and Hindu shrines on the same grounds which proves that different communities lived in peace and harmony with in close proximity. With the fall of Anuradhapura (1st Capital) in 1017 AD Polonnaruwa was chosen as the Capital. The Chola invaders after capturing the Last King of Anurahapura shifted the Capital for safety. During the period of Polonnaruwa three kings are given prominence though there were 20 kings.
1/ King Vijayabahu- Who was a provincial ruler gathered the army and invaded and liberated Polonnaruwa from the Chola rulers. King Vijayabahu ruled the country from 1070 to 1110 AD.
2/ King Parakramabahu- Ruled the country from 1153 - 1186 AD. He has been given a lot of prominence due to the contribution made by him on irrigation and Buddhism. The largest reservoir in the country is the work by this great king. His period is the epoch-making period of the country.
3/ King Nissankamalla - Has been given prominence due to leaving inscriptions left behind.
The main sites that are to be visited out side the old city are the Statue of King Parakramabahu, Pothgul Viharaya, Council Chamber of King Nissankamalla ect. The museum is also not to be missed.
To visit you could either go by vehicle or if you need to do a little exploring could hire a push bicycle from one of the hotels or guest houses close by.
The Gal Viharaya is magnificent. Four statues of the Buddha has been carved out from the same rock and the finishing touches could not be written. One has to see to believe how intricate the carvings are. There have been different theories on the standing statue.
The statue of Buddha in sleeping posture depict the final passing away of the Buddha. The two other statues of Buddha are in Meditation posture.
The other places of interest would be Thuparama, Vatadage, Hatadage, Rankoth Viharaya, Kiri Vehera, Lankathilake, Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) , ect ect...

Polonnaruwa is the second/medieval capital of Sri Lanka. It also is a world heritage site declared by UNESCO. The architectural & sculptural marvels in Polonnaruwa bear witness to the glory & majesty to an era which span to about 200years.

Polonnaruwa, considered as the second Capital City of ancient Lanka. Here unlike in Anuradhapura, there is so much variety and variation in the Ruins that a visitor can see. Palaces, Ponds, Dagoba's, wide protective walls, huge Buddha Statues carved from the Living rock, Image Houses with beautiful Paintings, A Statue which some beleive to be that of the Great King Parakrama Bahu and even ruins of one of the oldest Libraries and to Complement all this, the large and imposing Tank, the Parakrama Samudra. The Queen's Bath area is a marvel to see.
A truly wonderful place to visit.
